I wasn’t going to post anything but business has been hard recently…

Everyone has noticed everything has gone up in price… and not by a little bit.

The price of food is crazy and the quality is awful in some produce such a fruit, veg etc. catering is a luxury and not a necessity which I get but over the last 2 months I’ve had people message me for hours on end, finalising everything. Which- I offer a bespoke service so the more details I collect, the better my work but then to just not answer once I ask for a deposit. Or the amount of people who message and don’t even give you a response back, not even a ‘I don’t want to go ahead but thank you’ is so rude.

The amount of businesses who I’ve said they don’t have to pay the deposit I always ask for as I know how it can sometimes make life hard work paying dribs and drabs of money and easier to pay in one go. Then for them to cancel the booking last minute. Too last minute to offer the slot out to someone else. Hours of consulting, buying packaging, getting ready for the graze for them to cancel and to only cancel once I’ve asked for final numbers. I’ve still prepped for the graze. Still tried to sort childcare.

A lot of people think a graze table is expensive and yes they can work out expensive when catering for large amounts of people but it’s not just an hour setting up. On average companies charge £15-£25 a head for a graze table. As well as mileage and a set up fee and a fee for prop hire. I don’t charge anywhere near this, or for mileage, a set up fee or for prop hire.

Let’s put a weekend of grazing into context….

One weekend I did two graze tables and 27 individual boxes for a party. So three events in total.

Firstly I’ve spent hours consulting with my customers, finding out exactly what they want and quoting. I’ve ordered props, foods etc online which I can’t get in the shop to fit the different themes.

I’ve ordered packaging from the individual boxes to sandwich boxes etc to transfer the food in.

Great, now I can bulk buy to make it more cost effective. I spent all Friday morning visiting 3/4 shops for the best produce. As well as collect my bakes from Georgia in Biddulph. Friday afternoon and evening I’m just in the kitchen, cooking and prepping.

Saturday morning I go to the butchers to get the meat and pork pies (only the best from the best- which isn’t cheap).

Now to travel 30 minutes to set up for another 45 minutes and travel home again. I then get back in the kitchen, wash all my Tupperware boxes and get straight back to prepping whatever I didn’t get chance to do on Friday.

I then go to the set up, only 10 minutes up the road this time. The set up takes 1 hour then back home again. Clean all the stuff I’ve used.

Sunday- make all the food for 27 Individal boxes and package them up- which from start to finish takes me about 3.5 hours. Then to deliver 25 minutes away then 25 minutes home.

Packaging is ridiculous amount of money. £85 for 25 large boxes. I don’t factor that in when charging for graze boxes. I purely charge for the food and for a little bit of profit.

For 3 catering events that weekend I probably spent 15 hours on- maybe more and I made £100. Would you work for less then minimum wage?

Having a graze table is a bespoke service. A lot of people want a bespoke service but don’t want to pay the price. Everyone has a budget and having a graze table isn’t a necessity but before thinking a graze table is just an hours set up and that’s it. It really isn’t. The items on a graze table aren’t cheap either.

I’ve had a few people who have now messaged me multiple times, I’ve spent hours responding to their messages for them to cancel multiple times and they have never once gone through with the order, even after haggling for lower prices. Hours of my time I won’t get back. I don’t get paid for quoting or messaging back and forth and chasing payment. It’s just part and parcel of being self employed.

Allergies, I also don’t charge any extra when catering for allergies. Free from food is so expensive! Plus it’s not your fault you have an allergy but I spend a lot longer shopping for the allergy free foods. I normally only have to cater for one person with that one allergy but still have to buy full packets of stuff so food goes to waste. Most of the time I get told allergy information last minute as well which really isn’t helpful.

I don’t want to sound like I’m moaning as I love doing what I do but catering is time consuming and when I’m only charging slightly more then restaurants charge for a starter and I provide a plate full of food and more as well as travelling to people events/ home to set up a bespoke catering experience it’s annoying when people just waste your time cancelling last minute or sound like they are interested but don’t pay the deposit. At the minute, im working for free and in the current climate, that isn’t going to pay my bills.

This weekend has been manic! 🤯 just how we like it!🫣

Messages have been going wild this weekend. I have tried to get back to everyone quickly but honestly my weekend has been either causing absolute chaos in my kitchen (sorry Matt) or doing graze set ups or deliveres.

I am now signing out for the weekend to celebrate my Dads birthday. My biggest supporter always. So I will be back next week with all the grazes we’ve been up to this weekend as well as getting back to messages.

D E C E M B E R❤️🪩

December’s availability is very limited now. I have decided I am taking no more orders on for December after 21st November.

The last two Decembers have been absolutely manic, which I am grateful for but the stress is real🤣 now my little boy is two I want to start making our own Christmas traditions. With working flat out every weekend I am going to take advantage of him being off in the week and spending the time with him.

I also want to make every graze the best I can and visiting on average 3/4 shops per graze, ordering props offline, spending hours in the kitchen making the food and everything inbetween. Every graze takes a lot of time to plan and prep. So with this in mind, I can’t be taking on any last minute orders like normal.
