Alan & Rebecca Tavener Concerts at Kilmun!
CMC is pleased to help promote a concert at Historic Kilmun this evening.
Historic Kilmun is delighted to be offering a special evening concert at 7.30pm on Friday August 16th, with a wonderful programme of singing and organ music by Alan and Rebecca Tavener from Glasgow’s Capella Nova.
Alan Tavener (organ) was awarded the BEM in the 2020 New Year Honours List for his “services to choral music in Scotland”, and is well-known as Director of Glasgow’s concert choir Capella Nova, which specialises in early music. He is also known for his work at Jordanhill Church in Glasgow, where he formed a community choir and an ecumenical liturgical choir, and made a CD of solo organ music. Alan studied at Oxford University and was an educational research graduate of Strathclyde University, where he focused on the social and health benefits of group-singing. He is also an Honorary Member of the Glasgow Society of Organists and an honorary Associate of the Royal School of Church Music.
Rebecca Tavener co-founded Capella Nova, Scotland’s first professional choir specialising in early music, in 1982. Over the following years she instigated what became a very impressive commissioning programme, now standing at over 100 pieces, including works by James McMillan, Panufnik, Jackson, John Tavener, and many other prominent composers. Capella Nova has won several awards and made over 20 recordings. She is currently involved in a pan-European project promoting medieval music associated with Celtic saints, and writes about music for record labels and specialist journals. She is well known as a teacher of singing and public speaking.
With a fascinating programme ranging from ‘A Highland Rose’ by the English composer Christopher Tambling, and including ‘Panis Angelicus’ and ‘Ave Maria’ by French composer Cesar Frank, and ‘Pie Jesu’ from Faure’s Requiem, to two songs by Sir James McMillan, this promises to be a very special evening. Haydn’s very jolly and entertaining ‘Four Pieces for Flute Clocks’ is another piece to listen out for, and French composer Theodore Salome’s ‘Grand Choeur in A’ for organ will make a cheerful and impressive finale.
All are very welcome to come and enjoy a great evening’s music given by these first-class musicians!
