THE FALKIRK HOARD

The largest hoard of Roman coins ever discovered in Scotland was found alongside a piece of cloth said by some to be the earliest example of tartan yet discovered. It is known as the Falkirk Tartan.

The Coins On 9 August 1933 workmen were levelling a small hill in the area of Bell’s Meadow, (NS 8922 7992) removing the sand, when one of them hit a Roman jar with his spade. It broke on lifting and a hard metallic cluster covered in green mould fell out along with the remains of a piece of cloth. Fragments from this metal lump were clearly silver coins and the find was claimed as Treasure Trove. After cleaning, some 1,925 silver coins were identified; others having been taken from the scene by workmen suggest that the original hoard was of around 2,000 coins, making it the largest Roman coin hoard ever found in Scotland.

The earliest coin had been struck in 83BC, while Rome was still a Republic, and the latest had been minted for Alexander Severus in 230AD. Many were worn and had clearly been in circulation for some time before being added to the stash.

Another absolutely fascinating picture of . Amazing to see that the old military road on the right coming from the Fort is the same one we use now! 👀

I overheard a tour guide at the Wheel saying to a customer there is no Antonine wall or ruins… well there is. You just need to bring your imagination.

Rough Castle Roman fort on the Antonine Wall, then (mid-2nd century AD) and now.

Rough Castle was built in c. 142 and was abandoned just decades later. All that can be seen today are the earthworks.

Location: near present-day Falkirk, in Scotland.

These are amazing!

The Antonine Wall was a defensive structure built by the Romans in c. AD 140. It runs through what is now central Scotland. The structure comprised a ditch and a turf and timber wall. In front of the ditch the Romans dug these pits, called lilia. Their function was to stop the enemy having a free advance on the wall and to break up attacks. At the bottom of the pits, the Romans fixed sharpened stakes hidden among brushwood.

These pits are located at Rough Castle Roman fort near Falkirk, in Scotland.

If you have been walking about Rough Castle recently, you may have noticed the paths are looking particularly magical just now due to the dusting along the side. These are Catkins and I think they’re from the Silver Birch in the Woodlands and they allow the trees to reproduce.
