By the early twentieth century the Gordon Castle Highland Games had become a hugely popular event, regularly attracting crowds of over 30,000. Thanks to the patronage and great enthusiasm of the then Duke and Duchess of Richmond and Gordon the Games became renowned throughout Scotl

and, playing host to many famous competitors including heavy champion George Clark of Banffshire. By the late 1920s the Gordon Castle Highland Games had become synonymous with world record breaking escapades in the heavy events and was an unmissable fixture in the Highland Games calendar. The Games were halted during the Great War as the castle was used as an auxiliary hospital to care for injured soldiers. In 1938, the Castle and Estate was sold to the Crown Estate following two successive deaths leaving the family with unmanageable death duties to pay. It fell into disrepair before being ‘rescued’ by war hero and much loved soldier Lieutenant General Sir George Gordon Lennox (grandson of the 7th Duke of Richmond and Gordon) after World War Two. He was forced to knock down much of the original house due to dry and wet rot, but he and his wife began the loving restoration, which Angus Gordon Lennox (Grandson of Sir George) and his wife Zara, continue today. In 1976, to celebrate the bicentenary of the local village of Fochabers, Sir George and his wife staged a special one-off Highland Games in the grounds of Gordon Castle. Inspired by the historic event some 30 years past, the legendary heavy event competitor Hamish Davidson approached the current laird with a proposal to resurrect the annual games. Angus Gordon Lennox was taken by the romance of the idea and in 2011 the first Gordon Castle Highland Games and Country Fair took place. The event has been running annually ever since and attracts an international and national audience of 10,000 visitors to the one-day traditional event. Today, the Castle operates as an exclusive use venue for luxury escapes, weddings, corporate events and fishing parties.

We couldn’t have wished for a more beautiful day (not talking about the outdoors☔️) to round up our wedding season, celebrating the wonderful Eilidh & Connor tying the knot ❤️

With thanks to .estate & for supplying us with Christmas trees this season, both the Castle and Tower Hall are looking wonderful and truly set for Christmas now 🎄🎄🎄

These were put up in time for our final wedding of the year, celebrated over the weekend. We are all in full Christmas spirit now and ready to celebrate our very own staff Christmas party at the weekend 🎅🏼🎊

Our American friends from Bydand Ventures sent the first image as a reminder that they too are remembering our fallen today.

Fochabers paid a huge price in both World Wars and the Beech Avenue (picture two) was planted in 1919 to commemorate those lost from Gordon Castle and Fochabers.

At the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month - we will remember them.

All the way from Wyoming, USA, last week’s castle guests experienced their first ever pheasant shoot in Scotland. What a pleasure it was to host them!

Along with whisky tasting, distillery tours, gin tasting, afternoon teas, a trip to and - it was a jam-packed week, making some unforgettable memories 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Pheasant season officially begins! The weekend marked the start of our shooting season here on the estate🎉

Our firsts guests enjoyed not only the shoot, but their time spent in the Castle. From elevenses on the front lawn, lunch in lower octagonal hall and dinner in the dining room as well as some G&T’s enjoyed in front of the fire whilst unwinding after a successful day, our spaces offer the perfect blend of relaxation and celebration 🍂🍃

Did you know there was an amazing local man named John Scott who was Lord Nelson’s purser? Yesterday we hosted Rev John Maynard’s book launch, telling the story of John Scott, born in 1764 at Floods Farm, Spey Bay, whose role in the Royal Navy landed him a significant relationship of becoming Lord Nelson’s second hand. John Maynard, a member of the Nelson Society, had been encouraged to write the book by members of the Forres Heritage Trust after uncovering his findings to them back in 2023. After many years of research and uncovering his late wife’s connections to John Scott, the story finally came together and the book was able to be published with thanks to the help of the Nelson Society and funding from the Gordon and Ena Baxter Foundation. During this years Spirit of Speyside - Gordon Castle fishing are offering days tickets to Spey Salmon Fish on one of our four beats across the world-renowned river Spey. We have 12 tickets per day still available between the 1st and 3rd of May, and 6 tickets available for Saturday 4th May. £170 per day. 9am-5pm.
