Loss is an inevitable part of life. And with it of course, comes grief.

Grief can feel like a deep, dark hole that we will never climb out of, but when it all feels hopeless,
I like to remember that it works just like love.

Because, when we first fall in love, it is intense.
It is overwhelming and consuming and loud. We cannot think of anything else, and we constantly crave the one we love.

After a while it becomes less intense, but it grows.
It grows deeper, more comfortable. It settles down and settles in for the long haul, knowing that it is not fleeting or superficial. It is less consuming. Quieter. An undercurrent of our every day without overwhelming our every thought.

Sometimes something will happen to bring that overwhelming love back to the surface; moments of pride or surprise or nostalgia that remind us just how much we love someone. Moments where our love is once again intense and loud.

And then it settles back into our heart where it knows it will stay.

Grief is the same.

At first it is loud and consuming, intense and overwhelming.
We constantly crave the one we grieve.

Then it becomes less intense, less consuming. An undercurrent of our every day without overwhelming our every thought.

And sometimes something will happen to bring our grief bubbling right back to the surface. Moments where our grief is once again intense and loud.

And then it settles back into our heart where it knows it will stay.
Because great grief is born of great love.

So where grief remains, where grief rests,
it often helps to remember that love is there too.

Sitting with her arm around grief
and holding it tight.

“This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; v***r is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.”

To the living, I am gone,
To the sorrowful, I will never return,
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.

I cannot speak, but I can listen.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.

So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea,
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity,
Remember me.

Remember me in your heart:
Your thoughts, and your memories,
Of the times we loved,
The times we cried,
The times we fought,
The times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never have gone.

Let us not look for you only in memory,
Where we would grow lonely without you.
You would want us to find you in presence,
Beside us when beauty brightens,
When kindness glows
And music echoes eternal tones.

When orchids brighten the earth,
Darkest winter has turned to spring;
May this dark grief flower with hope
In every heart that loves you.

May you continue to inspire us:
To enter each day with a generous heart.
To serve the call of courage and love
Until we see your beautiful face again
In that land where there is no more separation,
Where all tears will be wiped from our mind,
And where we will never lose you again.

As I talk to families about their departed loved one’s lives I am always mindful of this. The following of the light despite occasional darkness. It’s such a privilege to put these stories together, to paint pictures of their time on Earth.

Make every second count. Life flies by.

This is my wish for you :
Comfort on difficult days,
smiles when sadness intrudes,
rainbows to follow the clouds,
laughter to kiss your lips,
sunsets to warm your heart,
hugs when spirits sag,
beauty for your eyes to see,
friendships to brighten your being,
faith so that you can believe,
confidence for when you doubt,
courage to know yourself,
patience to accept the truth,
Love to complete your life.

Such a beautiful funeral service for Philip yesterday, his amazing family did him proud. The songs his grandchildren chose meant there was not a dry eye in the house.

Joining hands, we become a circle,
Complete, connected and timeless,
We are whole, but not exclusive,
We are one and we will live as one,
But with endless others encircled around us.
Our marriage is neither beginning or end,
But a natural progression of our union,
Which finds us bound but not restricted.
All that was separate yields and flows,
Softly, towards the shared path of our future.
On the foundation of past knowledge,
We build modern family, a space of love,
An expanding community of new and old,
Emitting love, light and sublime acceptance,
We find all things reflected back at us,
Everything is provided for.
Together we hand-craft our next life phase,
It is all embracing, welcoming and generous,
The sensuous safety of our self made space,
Helps us to live bravely and without boundaries,
Here we nurture, thrive and multiply.
All history is ours now, set down by us, made by us,
Strong roots continually feed us, everything is possible,
We grow, we build, we share eternally now.
And holding hands, we look up, prepare,
For there is still far to go.

Losing a baby is heartbreaking. But that life, however early it is taken, will never be forgotten. Thinking of everyone who has lost their little one. Our Snowdrop Chapel at Parkwood Crematorium Elland is an intimate safe sanctuary to say farewells with love and support surrounding and enveloping.

Bless all families who have to go through this journey. Never forget how that little soul has touched the world for all eternity.

Love and strength. 🌱 💜🌈

“And when great souls die, after a period, peace blooms, slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration. Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed.”

Such a beautiful wedding reading. 💖

“Let there be spaces in your togetherness, And let the winds of the heavens dance between you. Love one another but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup. Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf. Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone, Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music. Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts. And stand together, yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.”

~ Khalil Gibran - The Prophet, 1923.

Always heartening when my funeral families send in positive reviews.
🌟🥰🥰🥰🥰🌟

“Catherine conducted my late cousin, Christina's funeral. She met myself and my cousin's partner to find out more about Christina. We both immediately felt at ease with her. Catherine was empathetic and sympathetic. She asked us about Christina's life and for any anecdotes we had. Catherine was happy to sit and listen to our ‘ramblings’ and from this she managed to put all this into an eloquent eulogy. Whilst touching on the most important aspects of my cousin's life she also brought in humour. I had many comments from some of the service attendees saying how beautiful it was.
I would highly recommend Catherine’s services as a celebrant.”

At the Celebration of Life I conducted this morning we finished off with a great tune. It was pure perfection for the characterful lady we’d just said our farewells to. She had an encyclopaedic knowledge of music and this was one of her favourites. ‘Rebel Rebel’…👌 💃🏻
You’ve got to love a bit of Bowie after the commendation. 🎵🎶🎶😘

Thought for today:

May we raise children
who love the unloved
things - the dandelion, the
worms and spiderlings.

Children who sense
the rose needs the thorn
and run into rainswept days
the same way they
turn towards sun...

And when they're grown and
someone has to speak for those
who have no voice

may they draw upon that
wilder bond, those days of
tending tender things

and be the ones.

Despite the grief, look for the love. 🧡 Weave it into your days. Smile at the memories and light them up. Share any heaviness or set it aside. Follow the light. Their love is still there. Glittering. Always.

One of the things I love about my Celebrant role is being a ‘story gatherer’. Finding out about a person’s life and all the little things that made them tick is so fascinating. It’s such a privilege to listen, talk, research, write and then deliver.
Today I’m preparing a eulogy for C, a lovely lady gone too soon who adored her many cats. This picture by one of my favourite artist friends Sophy Smith SophyLouise_Illustration made me smile as it offers such a wide eyed wonder. I feel C would have loved it too.
