Jumping to day 22 which is Hands on

Here's a quick time lapse of me rewinding the bobbin and threading the machine. A common occurrence when working on a big project.

I think at this point, I could definitely do it with my eyes closed! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Day 19 is Silver Linings

This past year has sucked. For everyone. But you have to make the most of what you've got and really appreciate the little things.

This was a beautiful sunset I got to witness as I arrived to work last October. This job introduced me to someone that shares a common interest and has inspired a creative partnership idea.

With the bonus of having more time on our hands, I've had the opportunity to do some online studying and taught myself a new skill. Something I wouldn't have necessarily done if the world hadn't shut down.

So that's my silver lining. I've had time to breathe, learn a new skill and develop something I've wanted to for years.

It's still in the works and lockdowns haven't exactly helped the process but good things take time and I'm excited for what the future holds!

Day 18 is Colour

This was for a live brief that I worked on while at uni. We had to design a character from Alice in Wonderland, using bright, child like colours.

I was given the mock turtle which is have turtle, half cow. So this is the shell that I made!

Day 17 is Process

Here's a little time lapse of me cutting out some masks. If only cutting out was actually this quick!

An ironing board isn't the ideal cutting table but you have to make do with the space that you've got. For anything bigger, it's usually straight to the kitchen table!

But hey, not for much longer. Watch this space ๐Ÿ˜

Day 16 is From the Archive

This was probably one of the first bits of clothing/costume I ever made. I think it was from either my GCSE or A Level textiles class. I seem to remember I chose to design and make something for a Burlesque dancer?

Oh, how I wish I still had that figure ๐Ÿ˜‚

Day 13 & 14 were free so jumping ahead to 15 which is Focus and Priorities

My focus at the moment is to just keep on top of everything. This year has been difficult on everyone for different reasons. A big struggle for me is going from no work for months to having jobs coming up left, right and centre.

It goes without saying that I'm beyond grateful for each of these opportunities and I'm so excited for them all but I need to focus my mind back. I've continued to make and create over the year but not for anything in particular so now I need to click back into work mode.

Any new project can seem overwhelming to begin with and being a bit out of practice isn't helping so the lists have come into play!

Lists, lists and more lists. I've discovered it's such an effectice way to unpack my brain, organise my thoughts and make myself productive. Who doesn't love a good 'crossing things off' session at the end of a task too?!

Day 10 is Small Detail

This is a close up of some free hand machine embroidery that I used to create the texture on this dress that I got to make for 100: UnEarth.

I absolutely loved creating this dress! And I got to make it twice, one that stayed beautiful and pristine (used as a prop) and then this one that got broken down and was worn by the character Persephone.

Day 9 is Learning Curve

This has got to be my biggest one.

This was my first time making a costume prop, first time entering a competition and first time truly believing in myself.

I got told a lot during this process that I needed to scale back my ideas and that I was being too ambitious and even one throw away comment that maybe this isn't the industry for me.

It made me doubt myself a lot and once you start to believe that, it makes you think you're not good enough.

But fortunately, I also had people on my side backing me up and cheering me on. So I managed to listen to them above it all and cracked on.

And it paid off. I got through to the finals of the competition, went to New Zealand and watched my own creation come alive on a huge stage. As did 60,000 other people. Not to mention that it was also put in the WOW museum for a year for another 40,000 people to stumble across.

So my biggest learning curve was to just keep going. Keep working hard. Choose to believe the people that are fighting in your corner. But most of all, to believe in myself.

That's not to say that I don't have times where I feel like I'm in too deep and imposter syndrome likes to rear its ugly head every now and again but it's become a good reference point in my life to look back on when things get tough!

Day 6 & 7 were "free" days so I'm jumping ahead with day 8 which is Work in Progress.

This will eventually be a denim jacket for me! I bought the fabric that I want to use months ago when we made an unexpected stop in Guadeloupe while I was working on a cruise ship. I didn't know what I wanted to do with it then but knew I had to have it.

I was doing some research for a different coat project and then this idea just popped into my head so I had to do it!

I padded up the mannequin to my measurements (what a way to make yourself feel insecure ๐Ÿ˜‚) and here we are. I love drafting a pattern on the stand. Something about working in 3D makes sense to me and I can see my ideas coming to life much quicker which is really satisfying.

I'm excited to get this finished, whenever that may be. Between a part time job and other commissions/projects, it could be months away. But hey, it's a fun, no pressure project and I like having one of those I can work on in the background between the madness of everyday life!

Day 5 is Newest Make

To fill some time between jobs and commissions, I've made myself some handy little sewing accessories.
Something about having a matching set is really satisfying!

I've been doing trial and error with my own set with the thoughts of maybe making up a few more to sell/gift to people. So far I've made a scissor pouch, drawstring bag with pockets, pin cushion with thread catcher attached, sewing machine cover, pin cushion for my sewing machine and I'm working on a bag to fit these all in! If you have any other suggestions, please let me know!

I've found it really therapeutic to go back to basic sewing to create small, fun things. I'm usually working on more complex commissions which can sometimes overload my brain and give me a headache but with something like this, I can switch off and just enjoy the experience and satisfaction of making something out of nothing!

Day 4 is On Your Desk

Mine is usually an organised mess. It might look chaotic to others but I know exactly where everything is!

I like being surrounded by fabrics and trimmings, I find it inspiring! I have so many little trinkets and tools lying around that I've collected over the years and I like having them in easy to reach places too.

Right now, I've got a small desk and an ironing board to work off but that will be expanding to something much more exciting very soon. Watch this space ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ

Day 3 is Beliefs & Values

My main beliefs and values are hard work, respect and trust.

I once heard that "you're only as good as your last show" and that stuck with me. With everything I do, I try to out do what I've done before. I work hard and try to build and learn with each new opportunity.

I will go above and beyond for anyone to make sure they're happy, all I ask is for a bit of respect in return. I will wash your underwear, all I ask is that you put it in the right wash basket ๐Ÿ˜‚

My job is to make people look beautiful but I believe there's more to it than just putting on a pretty costume. People need to feel beautiful on the inside too. I try and create a space that people feel comfortable in, somewhere they feel safe. I think it's important that people feel their best so they can perform their best. I want them to be able to trust that I'm doing everything I can and have no doubts that I care as much as they do.

And most of all, I do everything with appreciation. I'm so fortunate that I get to do what I love for a living so I try to be grateful for that every day โค

Day 2 is Style.

Again, being a costumer, a lot of the time I'm working on things based on someone else's design or concept so I don't necessarily have my own "style".

So I'd say my style is just to try and be as creative as I can. I always want to be learning new techniques and ways of working so my style is ever-changing and growing!

Jumping in on this years 'March Meet The Maker', better late than never!
First up, brand introduction.
For a first prompt, I find this one quite hard. I dont really have a "brand" as such, I just live in the world of costume.

I'm a costume maker, I'm a seamstress, I'm a dresser, I'm a supervisor, I'm a designer.

I'm anything that I want to be really.

I try not to limit myself which can honestly be a blessing and a curse but I do the jobs that I love and believe in and put my heart and soul into each one.

So that's what you get with me, my all and my everything! I guess that's my brand?
