📣Did you know that on this day in 1947, Helena, the 6th Countess of Sefton, sadly passed away in the Walled Gardens at Croxteth Park?

Helena was a fascinating figure who defied many conventions of her time. After losing her two children during the First World War, she dedicated herself to charity work and worked as a waitress at the Gordon Smith Institute for Seamen on Paradise Street during the Second World War.

Throughout her life, she was a keen gardener, and despite moving away from Croxteth in 1943, Helena frequently returned to spend time in the Walled Gardens, reflecting her lifelong passion for gardening. Today, her legacy lives on as we preserve and revitalise these cherished gardens, made possible by a £245,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Walled Garden is free to enter and currently open every day of the week from 10 am to 2 pm. Come and explore this enchanting space that holds so much history and charm! 🎋

Who's watching the tennis this weekend?

Did you know Tennis was originally called "Sphairistike", an ancient Greek word that translates to 'playing the ball with skill'.

Today, 27th June, marks the anniversary of the untimely death of Evelyn Molyneux, sister of the last (7th Earl), in 1917 at the age of just 14. Despite great wealth and privilege, tuberculosis, which plagued Evelyn for most of her life, could not be cured in those days.

The diary reads:

"9th June
Evelyn's temperature improved, so I went to London by 2 pm.
16th June
General O’Brien arrived at 1:30 pm. Daughter Elaine has had a holiday from the hospital.
22nd June
Evelyn is very bad.
25th June
A sleepless night with her despite Bromide – the cough and breathing are dreadful.
26th June
Another sleepless night, so I got Dr. W to come early to give her Morphia. She (…) mercifully under that through the long hours of difficult breathing and coughing. Till the end came at 5:40. I stayed with her until (…) took over.
27th June
To Kirkby to meet East about the grave. Then had undertaker here (how dreadful is all this part).

Yesterday was a landmark day at Croxteth Park as the beloved miniature railway reopened after 15 years! The yellow train, now known as the 'Crocky Rocket' following a naming competition, was unveiled to the public.

Originally built in 1981 and closed in 2009, the reopening has rekindled cherished memories for many. Families gathered at Croxteth Halt Station, sharing heartfelt stories and reconnecting with a piece of their childhood, including the family of Jack Wood, who worked on the original steam train.

This reopening was made possible by the dedicated efforts of volunteers who have revitalized this treasured attraction. For just under £3, visitors can enjoy a scenic ride through the picturesque grounds, complete with a mini tunnel.

If you missed the launch yesterday, don’t worry! The railway is back this weekend. Visit the Croxteth Hall website to learn more and book your tickets!

The image below, sent by Claire Wood is the only picture she has of her Dad, Jack Wood.

He was the business partner of Bert Beddows, he laid the track and oversaw the steam engine operation. Claire used to work in the kiosk during the school holidays.

We are loving all the memories of Croxteth Miniature Railway! Please keep them coming! You can submit via our website.

Just three more days until the launch!

Work on The Peach House will start soon, thanks to a vital £245,000 funding boost from The National Lottery Heritage Fund 🎉🌷

We can't thank The National Lottery enough for making this possible! 🙏💚

It is hoped that this funding will act as a catalyst for other funding streams, to help build on the ambition. Future plans include:

💚The restoration of a number of greenhouses and brick buildings in order to cultivate and grow the collection.
Developing a brand new education programme which will see the introduction of a pilot project working with around ten primary schools across the city. The aim of this is to encourage youngsters to connect with nature and showcase the links between botany and health and wellbeing.

💚 The introduction of horticultural and agricultural training courses as a result of educational partnerships with establishments such as Myerscough College and the Learning Foundry.

💚 There will be focus on how to make the collection a key visitor attraction, given its shared location with the Grade II* listed Croxteth Hall and the Country Park. Guided tours, workshops and open days will be created and attracting events will be a priority in order to support the future of the collection.

💚 Supporting mental health and wellbeing and tackling loneliness will be developed through partnerships with local and national organisations to create new pathways to ensuring members of the community who are vulnerable or isolated can access the collection regularly through an engagement programme.

💚Establishing a digital offer, for example creating a dedicated website, is also on the wish-list, which will open up the collection to people across the world who may not be able to visit in person. It will also ensure connections will be established with other worldwide botanical collections.

Today, 26th May marks the anniversary of arguably, Croxteth Hall's most famous photograph.
In 1920, (104 years ago!) all the staff and tenants of the 6th Earl gathered on the steps of the Hall, for his son's ‘Coming of Age’ party.

The 6th Earl's son was Viscount Hugh Molyneux, who went on to become the 7th and last Earl, who gifted the Hall to Liverpool for “public benefit”.

We were delighted to be listed among the most famous secret gardens in the UK by Sarah Hardy's recent article in The Mail on Sunday.

“Secret gardens have long been magical places filled with memories and mystery. As more heavenly havens are restored to their former glory, this beautiful evocation tells how they're also symbols of an age when the world was shut out”

On Wednesday the 15th we're running a walking tour of the historic estate and beautiful Victorian Walled Garden that surrounds Croxteth Hall.

Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough! 98today!

In honour of this special day, let's take a stroll down memory lane to 1985, when Sir David visited Croxteth Country Park. He planted reeds in the Nature Reserve, just before he got stuck in the mud!
Many thanks to the organisers that day Lancashire Wildlife Trust - Merseyside
