The lovely Julie with one of the vases for Arduaine Cottages.
It is always a pleasure putting together the vases for the cottages, Julie has a specific colour scheme which I am more than happy to stick to. Also she wrote the following, which makes all the hard work of growing so worth it. Kind words go far :)

"Thanks again for agreeing to supply our flowers for the cottages once again, and especially for the vase service this year.   Your flowers over the last few weeks have been absolutely stunning – as they have been over previous years – and we often get passing comments from guests during their stay or mention of the flowers in their reviews of us, which reflects on us as hosts too.  Our most recent guests were absolutely delighted to be able to take their anniversary posy home with them!   And it is great for us to be placing locally-grown, organically-grown flowers – doing our little bits for the planet and in so doing supporting another small local business.
Thanks again, Vee – for your flowers, your creative craftwomenship with them, and for your brilliant service, which is very much appreciated."

A mix of bouquets and DIY buckets for a small wedding . I never thought I would have to light the fire and deploy bananas to try and open blooms at the start of July! We had a week of misty dark and cool days, more akin to Autumn than midsummer. A few dry hours in between the drizzle allowed me to cut from the outdoor beds. In spring my tunnel grown ranuncs and anemones were destroyed by a large family of voles, so I lifted them early and filled the space with a mix of annuals ( seemed silly at the time but boy was I glad I did! ) Always an up side :)

The flat leaf parsley was left to flower and I'm liking the fresh yellow/green colours, the scent is also fresh with the addition of scented phlox and mint sprigs.

It’s been a while since my last post but I have not been idle. I found (like many I’m sure) that I had to tune out of the blah-de-blah of and get on with some worthwhile work wintering down the flower beds and planting bulbs for spring flowers. I have been out collecting bracken on the dry days, sadly not for my biodegradable wreaths this year as I am finally getting surgery on my wrist which will leave my in a stookie for about a month, and I wanted to get as much done as possible “putting the garden to bed” before the surgery. So I have used the bracken for mulching beds with the hope it will help suppress the weeds and will add a good dose of potash to the soil. This weekend, with a kind neighbours help 😊, I got a big trailer load of seaweed which has been washed up by the recent strong winds and have used it to mulch some of the outdoor beds and the rose beds. I like to get it on the ground straight away so the soul benefits from all the lovely minerals released by the seaweed as it breaks down. I’m always intrigued by the colours and forms of the seaweed, it really is amazing stuff and interestingly this year there was no plastic waste in it 🤔🤔. If I have time I’d like to make myself a wreath as there is an abundance of great material all around. Loads of hawthorn berries and hips and I need to cut back the eucalyptus 😃😅. So thank you Mother Nature for supplying such great (free) materials to enrich the soil for my sustainable cut flower business.

The carbon footprint of flowers.

🌍DAY 2🌍

Today we look back at a dissertation paper conducted by Rebecca Swinn who compares the carbon credentials of British grown and imported bouquets in a summary of her dissertation findings by Angela Coulton. (Available to view on our friend's at Flowers From The Farm website!)

⭐️Main Findings⭐️

▪️Emissions are found to be highest for Dutch lilies followed by
Kenyan gypsophila, Dutch roses and Kenyan roses ⬆️
▪️Emissions are significantly lower for lilies, snapdragons and
alstroemeria produced by commercial-scale and small-scale flower
growers in the UK ⬇️🇬🇧
▪️Emission hotspots are transport, heating and electricity use ✈️🔥

▪️Emissions per stem:

Dutch Lily: 3.478 Kg CO2
Kenyan Gypsophila: 3.211 Kg CO2
Dutch Roses: 2.437 Kg CO2
Kenyan roses: 2.407 Kg CO2
British lily: 0.819 Kg CO2(approx. 1/4 of Dutch lily)
British snapdragon (or any outdoor, locally grown flower) 0.114 Kg CO2per stem
British Alstromeria: 0.052 Kg CO2

The results would seem to support claims that British grown flowers have a much lower carbon footprint than any other flowers. 🇬🇧

Emissions saved by growing outdoors in Kenya are cancelled out by fertiliser use and air freight emissions, and the Dutch greenhouse-grown flowers remain high CO2due to highly automated systems and relatively inefficient heating and lighting, plus several hundred miles transport.

We love looking at this study because it reassures us that our blooms are far more sustainable than abroad! Why would you want to contribute to greater emissions by buying imported flowers which can be grown right here?

My wonderful son ‘tying the knot’ with his beautiful lady .scottish.lady who arrived in true style riding her very well trained and handsome pony Aries, then walked up the ‘aisle’ by her undoubtedly proud father Richard on Saturday 18th September at Lunga Pier. A very heartfelt and emotion-filled ceremony conducted by the wonderful Humanist Celebrant Annie Loughlin followed by a truly joyous celebration with family and friends. We were extremely well looked after and fed a fantastic feast by the amazing , who went above and beyond her duties with such kindness and attentiveness. I am extremely grateful to everyone who helped make the day so special and all the hard work and meticulous planning which Alex .scottish.lady had put in and worked tirelessly at beforehand and I am of course overjoyed for the beautiful couple Mr and Mrs Sinclair. Here’s to you Alex and Fergus 🥰🥰😍🤩 .Thank you all for making it such a fabulous day 😊🥂👰🥳🥳

The Monarda didyma is fairly pumping out the blooms just now and is one of my firm favourites as a filler flower. It has a lovely peppery aroma and some of the flowers pop up an extra bloom on top. Commonly known as beebalm, Oswego tea, or bergamot. It has a similar aroma to the bergamot orange ( Citrus bergamia )used to flavour Earl Grey tea. Identified in the 16th century by Spanish medical botanist Nicolas de Monardes. The dried leaves can be used in cooking and have a similar taste to oregano and the flowers can be used in salads for a vibrant splash of colour. All round a very useful herb with medicinal properties to boot! What’s not to like?

Great news from Islay. Simply stunning 😊

Angharad, our Conservation Officer, was excited to find a colony of very rare orchids called Irish Lady’s Tresses on Islay! This is a new site for the orchids and they were spotted just outside one of our CANN peatland project areas.

There were 14 flowering plants, setting a new record for the island. Aren’t they just gorgeous?

Great to have had a bit of rain to top up the water supply - but slightly disheartened to see the super tall cornflowers collapsed. Never mind in these situations I find going to smell my favourite roses always helps lift the mood 😁.
