Early will probably be crossing Morocco about now. It's the only country in Africa with both an Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline. fun fact: young swifts check nesting holes for sparrows, which often choose the same sort of places. The sparrows have been seen jumping on the backs of swifts to drive them off – but the bigger bird is usually the winner.

For this year's competition we're collaborating with @bbowt.org.uk who have really ambitious plans to put nature into recovery on 30% of land across its three counties by 2030.
