Catch a glimpse of a stunning programme by the Ionian Satellite Byers Live At St Giles last night.
The Ionian Singers with their conductor Timothy Salter were joined by the cellist Leo Melvin in a programme that journeyed far afield in time and location: English madrigals from the early 17th century, little-known choral music from 19th century Russia – Anton Arensky (three pieces for cello and chorus) and César Cui – 19th and 20th century music from England – including Stanford, Parry and Holst (in the 150th anniversary year of his birth) – and English folk song arrangements. Music for solo cello by György Ligeti and Timothy Salter completed the programme.

Bet you didn’t know agility and suppleness was a skill you needed to be an organist.

Sunday nights do not get more stunning or spooky than this, as “Phantom” played in the spiritual surrounds of St Giles.
With a stunning score of original, classical and contemporary music arranged and performed by our very own Ashley Valentine on the Wesley Organ, with the Camberwell community choir and soloist Olivia Carrell, last night was a night to remember!
Lon Chaney gives his most famous performance in this first version tale based on Gaston Leroux’s novel, which was first published as a serialisation in Le Gaulois from 1909-1910. Chaney plays the Phantom, who lives in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera, and falls in love with the voice of a young opera singer. Directed by Rupert Julian, this 1925 production launched the gothic style which would become the trademark of Universal horror films such as Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Mummy.
