It may be winter right now but the Soho Photography Quarter is injecting some colourful springtime vibes outside our gallery, courtesy of British photographer, Siân Davey's new free outdoor exhibition, The Garden! 🌸🌺🌿🌻🌱
Starting in 2020, British photographer Siân Davey (@siandavey1) transformed her abandoned garden over three summers into a vibrant space, filled with wildflowers, birdsong and people. 🌼
When the flowers bloomed, they called in the community. Everyone had a place in The Garden; the mothers and daughters, the lonely, the marginalised, lovers, the traumatised and heartbroken and those that had concealed a lifetime of shame.
The space became an expression of yearning, defiance, joy and interconnectedness.
When you visit, watch the film (2023, by Dylan Friese-Greene and Siân Davey) playing every evening on the wall opposite the photographs.

Many of Daido Moriyama's early photographs were influenced by the ‘Provoke’ group which published three magazines illustrated almost entirely with photography.
Moriyama joined the movement for the second issue of the magazine which, in addition to its political aims, came to solidify a type of Japanese aesthetic, 'are-bure-boke' meaning ‘grainy, blurry and out of focus’ images, embracing a tradition of experimental image making and rebellion against the technical precision promoted by the culture of the time.
As we continue to take you through each of the series featured in our Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective exhibition, curator Thyago Nogueira talks us through Moriyama's involvement with Provoke Magazine! @thyago1234

Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective is an exhibition that traces the path of the Japanese photographer who transformed the way we see photography and questioned the very nature of photography itself. Moriyama used his camera to interrogate and revolutionise the way we look at the world with his dense, grainy images.
Exhibition curator Thyago Nogueira gives us an intro to Daido Moriyama as well as an intro to what you can expect to see in the show!

Afrogenesis is a new immersive filter by London based photographer, filmmaker and CGI artist Sarah Ejionye (@sarahejionye on instagram), launching today as part of our augmented reality initiative ‘Open Space’ curated in collaboration with Zaiba Jabbar. 🌀🔥
Listen to Sarah discuss Afrogenesis, as she talks us through the process of creating the AR filter!
Taking the form of an immersive digitally rendered environment, Afrogenesis is a reimagining of three different short stories from Dark Matter: A Century of Speculative Fiction from the African Diaspora (2001), A Science-Fiction anthology featuring work by black writers. Afrogenesis combines these separate tales into one world, interpreting them via augmented reality.
The user is transported onto a spaceship with a jungle atmosphere and encounters sentinels called Watchers (based on Twice, At Once, Separated by Linda Addison) witnesses the all encompassing flames of the Soucouyant (Nalo Hopkinson’s Greedy Choke Puppy) and may spot a mystery floating statue holding a kalimba (Charles R. Saunders’ Gimmile’s Songs).
Afrogenesis is now available to use - head to our Instagram profile to explore the digital world, situated within the filter section! ✨
