The Photographers' Gallery

The Photographers' Gallery Welcome to the official page for The Photographers' Gallery. Join us to hear our latest news

The Photographers' Gallery was founded in London’s Covent Garden in 1971 and was the first public gallery in the UK dedicated to the medium. Over the years it has introduced such international photographers as Juergen Teller, Robert Capa, Sebastião Salgado, Andreas Gursky and Taryn Simon to British audiences, whilst championing the work of home based practitioners including Martin Parr, Zineb Sedi

ra, Nick Knight and Corinne Day.

In May 2012, after an ambitious two-year redevelopment to offer new and enhanced spaces for exhibitions, learning, retail and social activities, The Photographers’ Gallery re-opened in its new home in Ramillies Street, Soho, London. It continues to present a diverse and critically acclaimed public-programme of exhibitions, events, talks, workshops and courses that encourage deeper engagement with, and learning through the photographic medium.

It may be winter right now but the Soho Photography Quarter is injecting some colourful springtime vibes outside our gallery, courtesy of British photographer, Siân Davey's new free outdoor exhibition, The Garden! 🌸🌺🌿🌻🌱

Starting in 2020, British photographer Siân Davey () transformed her abandoned garden over three summers into a vibrant space, filled with wildflowers, birdsong and people. 🌼

When the flowers bloomed, they called in the community. Everyone had a place in The Garden; the mothers and daughters, the lonely, the marginalised, lovers, the traumatised and heartbroken and those that had concealed a lifetime of shame.

The space became an expression of yearning, defiance, joy and interconnectedness.

When you visit, watch the film (2023, by Dylan Friese-Greene and Siân Davey) playing every evening on the wall opposite the photographs.

Experience The Garden for yourself now - outside The Photographers' Gallery! 🌷

We are sad to learn that after 95 extraordinary years, Elliott Erwitt has passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

It has been a huge privilege for The Photographers’ Gallery to have worked with Elliott for all these years and we know that his images will continue to captivate and inspire for generations to come.

“The worse the weather, the happier I am” – Martin Parr

We're dipping into our archive again and for November/December, we're looking at the work of Martin Parr!

'Bad Weather' was a 1982 exhibition by the British documentary photographer focusing on a great British obsession - weather. While many photographers avoided shooting in bad weather, for Martin Parr, “the worse the weather, the happier I am”. He felt that bad weather often created an atmosphere lacking in bright, sunny weather, and so decided to go out to see how bad weather revealed the character of the things we see.

Using an underwater camera and flash-light he presented a bizarre and often humorous world turned topsy-turvy by wind and/or rain. His images were later published in a book of the same title!

Access to the Archive is free and by appointment only. If you would like to view any material from the Archive or have any Archive enquiries please email [email protected]

Don't miss the book launch of Simon Wheatley's latest self published project - Always and Forever There this Thursday!

In the wake of the suburban riots that rocked France in late 2005, Simon Wheatley found himself in the small town of Blois in the Loire Valley, on the edge of which stood France’s fourth biggest banlieue, where almost half the population were lumped in a world far removed from the bourgeois town centre with its pretty postcard view.

Fascinated by the demographics and this opportunity to portray France’s institutionalised marginalisation, he made several trips over the course of a year.

Simon will be joined by London-based author and educator, Ciaran Thapar to discuss the project

Talk starts at 6:30pm and will be followed by a book signing

"Everyone has a place in our garden" – Siân Davey

We're excited to welcome British photographer, Siân Davey as the next artist featured in our major outdoor exhibition for the Soho Photography Quarter!

'The Garden' is a project she started in 2020, transforming her abandoned garden over three summers into a vibrant space, filled with wildflowers, birdsong and people.

Together with her son, Luke, Davey cultivated a space rooted in love. They researched native flowers and encouraged biodiversity, sourcing seeds and plants locally.

Launching this week, alongside the large-scale display, listen to The Garden soundscape (2023, by Siân Davey) and watch the film (2023, by Dylan Friese-Greene and Siân Davey) playing every day from dusk on the wall opposite the photographs.

You still have time to subscribe to our newsletter for a chance to win tickets to for a special screening of the new documentary Tish, about the life and work of British photographer, Tish Murtha at the Curzon Soho, London on Wednesday 6 December at 6:20pm! (Prod. Modern Films )

Following the screening, director Paul Sng and Ella Murtha will be in conversation with curator Gordon MacDonald, who co-curated the exhibition of Tish Murtha’s photography at TPG in 2018.

Deadline for entry is Wednesday 29 November, winners will be notified on December 1st
–––

As a working class photographer from the North East, Tish felt an obligation to the people and problems within her local environment, and used documentary photography to highlight and challenge the social disadvantages she herself suffered.

Tish has had a longstanding rapport with the Gallery. In 1982, she moved to London where she was commissioned by us to create a series on the s*x industry in Soho for the group show, London by Night (1983). We also showcased her work in 2018, Tish Murtha: Works 1976-1991.

Tish’s brilliant eye, her unswerving ethics and constant empathy are present in her images, yet little is known of the artist herself. In this feature documentary, Tish’s daughter, Ella opens up her mother’s archive for the first time on screen to reveal a treasure trove of unseen images, artefacts, letters and diaries. Ella takes to the road to meet people who knew Tish and ask why she did not receive more recognition in her lifetime.

In digging into the past, Ella comes to terms with her own grief at her mother’s passing and reconnects with family members not seen in years.

TISH is released in UK & Irish cinemas from 17 November by Modern Films

Many of Daido Moriyama's early photographs were influenced by the ‘Provoke’ group which published three magazines illustrated almost entirely with photography.

Moriyama joined the movement for the second issue of the magazine which, in addition to its political aims, came to solidify a type of Japanese aesthetic, 'are-bure-boke' meaning ‘grainy, blurry and out of focus’ images, embracing a tradition of experimental image making and rebellion against the technical precision promoted by the culture of the time.

As we continue to take you through each of the series featured in our Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective exhibition, curator Thyago Nogueira talks us through Moriyama's involvement with Provoke Magazine!

As one of a generation of postwar-Japan’s groundbreaking artists, Daido Moriyama has continually established his own visual grammar.

The 'Daido Moriyama: A Retrospective' exhibition catalogue features more than 190 chronologically arranged images that reveal his constantly evolving career: from his early editorial work of the mid-1960s, focused on the American occupation and the experimental theater; his radical experimentation of late 1960s and the 1970s; the self-reflexive photos of the 1980s and 1990s; and his ongoing exploration of cities, among other relevant moments.

It also includes more than 400 spreads from Moriyama’s rarely seen publications, mapping the sources of his visual production. Rounding out the volume are texts by the editor and leading Japanese scholars, a personal essay by the artist, and a full chronology of his life and work. Accompanying our major exhibition, this impressive volume reframes Moriyama’s legacy!

Winter is coming to the Print Sales Gallery this month! ❄️

The Winter Editions is a new collection that will be on display, celebrating the beauty, wonder, and whimsy of the season as the winter's festivities begin. Twelve of our represented artists interpret the theme in their distinctive style, inviting us to embark on a visual journey through winter landscapes that span from the vast expanse of the Siberian Arctic to the lush and mystical forests of Croatia.

Many of these landscapes stand devoid of human presence, echoing the serene stillness often associated with the season. These offer windows into a world that undergoes an eternal, cyclical transformation, shedding its leaves and standing steadfast against the elements, patiently awaiting the arrival of spring.

Featuring works from artists: Evgenia Arbugaeva, Raúl Cañibano, Julie Cockburn, Paul Cupido, Fouad Elkoury, Alma Haser, Nicholas Hughes, Chrystel Lebas, Martina Lindqvist, Simon Roberts, Pentti Sammallahti, Jon Tonks

Exhibition opens Friday 24 November!

Each image is available in a limited edition of 25, with prices starting at £450 + VAT. Prints can be purchased using Own Art, allowing you to acquire the art you love and pay it back in 10 monthly instalments, completely interest free.

Tonight!

Join writer and editor, Dalia Al-Dujaili and photographer and photo editor, Moulaye Diarra this evening as they explore what it means to incorporate a more inclusive, decolonial approach to editing and curating photography, using The Road to Nowhere and M Le Monde magazines.

The history of photography and art is often told from a Western, Eurocentric and white perspective. A decolonial approach addresses what is left out of this history and develops strategies to amplify untold stories.

Following last year's book launch of Volume one, join documentary photographer, Marc Vallée on Thursday 23 November as he will be in conversation with filmmaker, curator and writer, Andrew Finch in our Cafe Bar to mark the publication of his new book 90s Archive: Volume Two.

The book signing will take place after the talk.

“Marc confided that his time in New Jersey was an attempt to move away from the ghosts of London clubland that first summer. I often think of Marc’s work as pushing out from trauma, presenting a complex visual autobiography soaked with s*xuality and loss but executed with diligence. The gentle acts of rebellion of his subjects are expressions of sound and fury, conduits of his love and friendship and authenticity and fantasy and life...”

For our next animation located on the Corner Screen outside our building, we've got new work on display from Jessica Wilson!

Perfectly Clear depicts a 3D-animated hand cleaning a dirty window. We see it moving methodically behind the glass pane, obscured by layers of dust, dirt and grime which are slowly erased.

The work considers how much experience is now mediated through screens, our tactile interaction with them, and how this can both clarify and obscure the virtual and physical worlds. With painstaking attention to everyday details, Perfectly Clear offers an uneasy meditative space where watching soapy water drip down the surface of the glass, or a dust cloth rub against it, both draws us in and prevents us from ever gaining a clear view.

We're also presenting Jessica Wilson's computer-generated animation Smile Driver (2019) every evening from dusk in Soho Photography Quarter. Until 20 November

The bookshop will remain open this evening as we host photographer, Raymond Meeks () for a book signing and talk in the Café Bar!

Raymond Meeks (Ohio, 1963) has been recognised for his books and pictures centred on memory and place, the way in which a landscape can shape an individual and, in the abstract, how a place possesses you in its absence. His books have been described as a field or vertical plane for examining interior co-existences, as life moves in circles and moments and events—often years apart—unravel and overlap, informing new meanings.
