Lets keep it real for the rhino, these incredible modern day dinosaurs tumbling into #extinction in South Africa because of rampant #corruption and the government in a permanent state of inertia. Let’s speak the truth - cold hard facts that cannot be ignored - because if more people speak out, the word will get out. Who’s with me? FACT: The white rhino population in Kruger - previously the largest population of white rhinos in the world - has plummeted 67% from around 10,621 in 2011 to just 3,549 individuals in 2019. FACT: In ground zero #Kruger National Park, poachers continue to masquerade as rangers, even though SANParks management claimed back in May that they would introduce polygraphs. Arguably just deflection from the days prior arrest of SANParks CEO Mketeni, May 6th. According to the police report, he forced himself on a young woman working inside Kruger, beat her, and then left her for dead. And this is the man in charge of South Africa’s natural heritage. CRIME PAYS. He was rewarded with paid “special” leave, indefinitely. FACT: The greatest tragedy of South Africa’s rhino #poaching crisis is that our best men are persecuted for exposing corruption and pursuing high level targets. FACT: The South African government continues to make decisions that favour poaching #syndicates - such as the biggest bust of rhino horn ever - 250kg - that they simply refuse to answer to. They get away with it because so few people with influence are willing to speak out. Whether a rhino charity or a lone conservationist, we will all be judged for what we did, but most of all we will be judged for what we did not do. This is World Rhino Day.
