1901 Arts Club

1901 Arts Club Central London's intimate and unique event space - inspired by Europe's Salon culture
(27)

Since opening in 2007 the 1901 Arts Club has turned into the lively hub of London's artistic community that Joji Hattori envisaged when he started the project. Used as an events venue and a central and beautiful space to rehearse and make music, it's frequented by chamber music ensembles, soloists, orchestras and societies. Located on the vibrant South Bank of the Thames, the 1901 Arts Club is a u

nique venue dedicated to supporting artistic expression and bringing together musicians, artists and persons who share an appreciation for the arts. Inspired by Europe's salon culture, the Club seeks to foster conversation, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas in an intimate setting... and now on Facebook. The Club is an elegant venue that can be hired exclusively to host single or regular events, providing a private atmosphere not only conducive to informal gatherings, but also business meetings, public recitals, corporate entertainment and private parties. We offer bespoke packages for celebrations, recitals or small conferences that include mouthwatering catering, fine hospitality and entertainment, should you require. Built in 1901 as a schoolmaster's house, the building maintains its late Victorian exterior while the Club's beautifully decorated rooms re-create the intimate ambience of a private salon. With a performance space, meeting room, terrace and bar among its facilities, the venue offers opportunities to make music with colleagues and friends, to meet with like-minded people, and to enjoy gatherings of all genres.

Reynaldo Hahn - a Venezuelan in Paris

Pianist Clara Rodriguez, recently hailed as “ The Queen of Latin American Classical Music” by BBC Radio 3, has devised a programme as homage to composer Reynaldo Hahn, born in Caracas in 1874; a celebration of his life and work, honouring his Parisian and Venezuelan heritage and his place in the artistic world of his time.

Soprano Parvathi Subbiah’s interpretations of his melodies will be enchanting, especially since Hahn’s songs are known for their lyrical beauty and intimacy. The inclusion of anecdotes by Susan Porrett will surely offer the audience a glimpse into Hahn’s personality and early rise in the vibrant Parisian salons, highlighting the composer’s journey from a talented adolescent to a celebrated artist.

The evening’s Venezuelan pieces by Miguel Astor, Federico Ruiz, Heraclio Fernández, and Teresa Carreño are wonderful complements bridging cultures and showcasing the richness of Venezuelan musical traditions. Selections from Otilio Galíndez and the seldom-heard songs by Teresa Carreño promise an evening rich with cultural and historical depth, weaving together romance, nostalgia, and vibrancy.
This combination of storytelling, piano, and vocal performances will immerse the audience in the timelessness of compositions such as Clair de lune by Debussy and Poulenc’s Homage to Edith Piaf will be a perfect celebration of music and poetry.

REPERTOIRE AND PERFORMERS ANNOUNCED
for next Wednesday's EVENING OF CHAMBER MUSIC (2 Oct).

This concert is largely a celebration of music written in the last century. We start out with a string duet written by New York-based composer, Caroline Shaw, who was the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2013. We follow up with two solo works by Igor Stravinsky, before ending the first half with a trio by Jean Françaix.

After a brief interval we will resume with some reed trio works by Jacques Ibert and Gordon Lewin, before ending our evening with some cello music, firstly the solo cello sonata by Paul Hindemith and then the beautiful Jackie-O by two-time Grammy-award winning cellist and composer Mark Summer.
