The Youth marked the end of 12 days of Christmas with a trip to see A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic ❤️
As Scrooge promises, “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year!” 🫏 🐑 🐫 👑 ⭐️
Epiphany, on 6 January, marks the arrival of the Magi to visit the infant Christ. The feast of the Epiphany gives us the chance to reflect on the fact that the Magi were visitors from "other lands" - emblematic of the fact that Jesus came for all mankind.
With this in mind, we will be holding our Epiphany Carol Service at 6pm on Sunday 7 January. This will give us another chance to sing carols together and to listen to music from the choir, including pieces by Thomas Hewitt-Jones, Palestrina, Peter Cornelius and our own Ian Shaw who will be accompanying us on the organ.
We very much hope you will be able to join us for the formal closing of Christmas at St John's!

Father John says:
On 27 December, we remember John the Evangelist, beloved disciple of Christ and patron of this church and I would like to invite you to join us for a High Mass at 12 noon on Wednesday 27 December. After the Mass, you are invited to join me for a "bring and share" lunch at the vicarage.
John was one of the first to be called by Jesus and remained with him until the very end, subsequently taking on the care of Christ's mother, Mary. He is often depicted in art as the author of the Gospel with an eagle, symbolizing "the height he rose to in his gospel."
Merciful Lord, we beseech thee to cast thy bright beams of light upon thy Church,
that it being enlightened by the doctrine of thy blessed Apostle and Evangelist Saint John
may so walk in the light of thy truth, that it may at length attain to the light of everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

St John the Evangelist, Upper Norwood, is a church and parish in the north of the borough of Croydon that seeks to serve its community with inspiring worship and social outreach.
Our life together is centred on the High Mass, which takes place at 10am each Sunday. A sermon is preached in church while the children take part in their own worship and activities, and then we come together for Holy Communion. The choir accompanies our worship, and also sings Choral Evensong at 6pm most Sundays.
The church is open every day, and worship continues Monday to Saturday with Morning Prayer at 9am and Evening Prayer at 5pm. There are also additional services of Holy Communion on Wednesdays at 9.30am and Saturdays at 10am.
There’s lots more besides worship going on at St John’s. Every Wednesday from 1pm to 3.30pm the Upper Norwood Hive welcomes all comers for lunch and socializing, and gardening takes place on the Meadow.
St John’s is a very musical parish, having special relationships with the London Mozart Players and the Central Band of the Royal British Legion. We have regular coffee concerts and organ recitals, as well as the regular round of sung services.
We regularly prepare people for baptism and confirmation, and run Lent and Advent courses to keep us refreshed in our faith. Get in touch if you want to learn more!
