🎃👻 With Halloween on the horizon its time to secure your place on the Dunster Ghost Walk! 👻🎃

This event proved very popular last year with participants thoroughly enjoying the combination of history and paranormal and opportunity to get involved with some ghost hunting for themselves at a very haunted location.

This will be a great event for those who are not necessarily interested in history but want to get involved with an Extours paranormal experience. Or maybe you have joined me for an event at Dunster in the past and would like to experience the paranormal side of the very haunted area again without the addition of the history.

During this event we visit locations in the area that are known to be haunted and carry out our own paranormal investigations at these locations. You will learn of numerous ghost sightings that have been recorded in these areas over the years, some are also backed up with historical ghost-lore. There is no better place for it, after running paranormal events all over Somerset it is safe to say that Dunster is without doubt the most haunted location that I cover.

No experience in paranormal investigating is necessary, everything will be provided and its use explained to you. We will make use of various "ghost-hunting" devices and attempt to communicate with any spirits that might want to communicate with us. For any participants feeling particularly brave we have a number of experiments that you can try including the estes method.

Historical Walking Tour of Clicket

Often referred to as the Lost Village of Exmoor this settlement was abandoned in Victorian times. It it thought to have been inhabited for at least 700 years! Parking for this event is approximately 10 minutes drive from Dunster. The walk will begin from the parking location and will be led by Bobbie who knows the area very well. Availability can be found below.

The settlement is located in an isolated valley of Exmoor, it is a steep walk down and will take about 15 minutes to get to Clicket where you will be welcomed by the remains of the buildings that were once inhabited by the people of Clicket. Pirates of Lundy and a brave Watchet sailor who fought their leader

An interesting period in our history that is rarely spoken of is how from the time of the reign of Elizabeth I the island of Lundy was held by numerous groups of pirates. During the 17th century Barbary pirates from the north coast of Africa captured and held Lundy and used it as somewhat of a base of operations. You would be forgiven for assuming that the pirates were here to gain wealth from robbing supplies from the numerous boats that would have passed Lundy on their way up the Bristol Channel. Records point out that the leader of the group of pirates during the first part of the 17th century lived like a king from the supplies that his men had plundered ships, so they clearly gained much wealth from these ships. However, this was not their main target. In fact, the reason the pirates were here during this period was to feed the growing slave trade back in Africa.

Yes, that’s correct, long before the American Slave Trade was ever established English people were being captured from all over the coastline of Somerset, Devon and Cornwall by pirates who originated from Africa. It is recorded that by the 1650s there were at least 20,000 English people held in bo***ge In North Africa. It is a fascinating period in history that had a massive effect on many families from the West Country. Many were left in poverty when fishermen who provided an income for their families never returned. It also had a big psychological effect on people, during this period many refused to go out to sea to fish through fear of being captured. There is a record in existence which shows how one man from Cornwall exclaimed “he would rather live in poverty than risk being taken by the pirates”.

It is recorded in 1608 how a Watchet sailor called George Eskott was captured while out at sea by a notorious and bloodthirsty pirate gang and held on the island of Lundy. At this point the island was held by the wicked Thomas Salkeld, it is said that he lived like a king on the island, feasting and drinking on all of the supplies that he and his men had taken. Being faced with a life of bo***ge the brave George Escott decided he would fight back against the pirates. After biding his time he planned a revolt with some other prisoners which was carried out successfully. George fought the pirates with only a shovel but managed to break Thomas Salkeld’s arm and escape Lundy! And yes, this really happened! George returned to Watchet a hero. There is a document in existence from James I who gives his thanks to George and awards him a pension of 18 pence a day for his efforts.

Pictured is Lundy Castle during the late 18th century. It is thought that the first castle was constructed on the island during the reign of Henry III.

Join us for a unique opportunity to explore this old chapel and get involved with a paranormal investigation at a truly spectacular location. The history of this building goes back over 800 years! Connected to an abbey that housed Cistercian monks for over 350 years and built on the site of a sacred well that is thought to have been important in Celtic times, to say this chapel is an old building would be an understatement!

During this event we will make use of various devices that you would expect to see on a paranormal investigation. You will also have the opportunity to get involved and use these. We don’t use Ouija boards or other certain devices that are related to the more sinister side of paranormal investigations as some people attending these events don’t want to be involved in that side of things. For the braver members of the group there will be some experiments that we will use such as the estes method and we would also like to carry out some individual experiments if there is anyone brave enough to attempt this alone!

The chapel is a cosy building with ample seating and is located at Washford in Somerset (About 10 minutes from Minehead – approximately 30 minutes from Taunton and Bridgwater). There are kitchen and toilet facilities available.

Whether you are someone who is interested in the idea of getting involved in a paranormal investigation but never had the opportunity or a seasoned ghost hunter looking for a great location to hold your own investigation this will make the perfect experience for you.

We will run 2 events per evening, each will run for 2.5 hours although if you would like to then you are more than welcome to attend for the whole 5 hours.

2.5 hours - £23.50
5 hours - £45

If you choose to book for 5 hours the event will run from 7pm until midnight (12am)

With all of the excitement surrounding the dragon in Taunton I thought I would say a little bit about the history of the dragon and its place in the history of Somerset.

The dragon symbol is believed to be of Celtic origin and its thought to have been the emblem carried into battle by early Britons in battles with the Romans. Later it is thought to have been adopted by Romano-British people following the fall of the Roman Empire. It is recorded that in 655AD the dragon symbol was used as the emblem by the King of Gwynedd and was known as the Red Dragon of Cadwaladr.

The Anglo-Saxons arrived in the 5th century, there is some debate as to whether whether they invaded or were initially invited over by the Romano-British to help fight of Celtic tribes who were previously kept in check by the Roman military. Regardless of whether they were invited or not, following a series of battles the Saxons eventually settled and established a number of kingdoms.

Known as the Dark Ages there is little written historical evidence from this period which over the years has led to the establishment of many myths such as that of King Arthur. It is well known that by the late 8th century the Vikings were raiding and plundering Saxon settlements along the coastline. By the 9th century not only had the Vikings settled in England they had also established their rule over the majority of the Saxon kingdoms (known as Danelaw). At this point only one Saxon kingdom remained, the Kingdom of Wessex. Wessex was ruled by Alfred the Great and contemporary historical evidence shows that Alfred adopted the dragon emblem to represent Wessex. After a number of battles with the Vikings and establishment of the burh (where we get the modern word for borough) and England's first primitive navy (earning Alfred the title of “Father of the English Navy”) not only did he save Wessex but he claimed back much land that was previously lost to the Vikings.

I have merely touched upon the surface of this period in Somersets history but just wanted to give a little background to the dragon's association with Somerset for those who aren't aware. I find it fascinating and every time I see the dragon emblem whether it's on a flag or on a statue such as that new one in Taunton I can't help but think of King Alfred and his struggles against the Vikings and how we have him to thank for the continued use of the dragon to this day.

If you would like to learn more about the amazing history of Somerset be sure to follow us on FB at Extours or better still join us on one of our events!

The roots of the bloody Battle of Sedgemoor are sown deep into the history of Somerset. In 1685 the ill-fated Duke of Monmouth attempted to usurp the throne from his uncle, James II which resulted in the last battle that was fought on English soil and the death of hundreds of the Dukes supporters.

Not only will you learn about the bloody history of the infamous rebellion that took place all over Somerset, you will also hear paranormal stories associated with the area.
