On St David's Day a look back to a visit I made in March 2021 to the biennial Daffodil Festival in St Mawgan's Church in Meneage on the Lizard peninsula in Cornwall. Dating back to the 13th century the church was one of two founded by St Mawgan, a 6th century abbot bishop who travelled from Pembroke to Brittany.

The daffodil was adopted by the Welsh in the 19th century as the National flower of Wales, but it is Cornwall that has become synonymous with this golden harbinger of Spring. In the 1870's, in an early example of farm diversification, a Scilly Island potato farmer called William Trevellick wondered if he could make a profit from the wild narcissi growing on his farm, so he packed 30 bunches into a hatbox and sent them off to London, where daffodils wouldn’t be in flower for weeks. He made seven shillings and sixpence. The next box earned more, so he and his neighbours began cultivating the flowers and an industry was born.

By 1905, 700 tons (635 tonnes) of narcissi were being sent to the mainland from the Isles of Scilly. Today Britain produces 90 per cent of the world’s cut daffodils, 80 per cent of which are grown in Cornwall.

Not even the Irish 'summer' weather could dampen the happiness of these two! A wedding of two traditions, Irish & Sri Lankan, with bright zingy shades of orange to bring on the sunshine....lots of monbretia, and nasturtiums in the mix. Wishing them every happiness. Thanks to Karen Waterfield Designs for the stunning buttonholes, and Louisa Louisa Scott Jewellery for all her help. Photography by Marty

A week has flown by since the brilliant at . I was invited by NIFFA, the Northern Ireland Flower & Foliage Association to do a demonstration using just some of the beautiful locally grown flowers we have available, here in Northern Ireland. This arrangement was based on the flowers I did for the Service of Reflection in St Anne's Cathedral following the death of the Queen, and the first visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to Northern Ireland last September.
The colour scheme was based on the late Queen's racing colours of scarlet and purple. With thanks to Andy and Aisling of for all their organisation of the day. It was just great to see how much interest there was at the Show for our local flower growers, and for sustainable methods of floristry. Alstroemaria and dill from

Florestina had the great honour to be asked to do the flowers in St Anne's Cathedral yesterday for the Service of Reflection for The Life of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, in the Presence of His Majesty The King and The Queen Consort. The inspiration came from Her Majesty's love of colour, and her racing colours of Purple and Scarlet. The flowers came from the gardens at Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, local flower growers Trainview Farm and beautiful dahlias grown by Tony Blaney Oakfield Fresh Cut Flowers as well as from friends gardens. The purple delphiniums, King Charles's favourite flower, came from Ballyscullion Park . All seasonal, sustainable, compostable, and foam free.
