I was 16 when I came out to my parents.
I was dreading it for over 2 years.

Although I always knew they loved me, there were so many misconceptions around being part of the LGBT+ community that they did not fully comprehend.

I remember having to "prove" to them those misconceptions and myths were wrong. I would search magazines and leave them open on their pillows, on the articles I wanted them to read. It was a slow process of educating and making them aware that I was and still am the same person. That my sexual orientation does not change who I was in the society. I was always me.
It was not easy. I felt like fighting to prove my right to exist.

The church/religion I was brought up did not accept by who I was. At times, I felt hopeless and did not want to exist, as existing was too painful. Too many hurdles to try to fight alone, as I felt at that time.

That led me to depression, lack of self-esteem and consequently 7 attempts or planned attempts of su***de back in Brazil. At times I was harsh. If I was not depressed, I was on a protective mode with walls so high around me that I ended up hurting people who loved me and cared about me.

A little angel of a friend managed to persuade me to come to Europe. And that was my salvation.

Scotland was the first place in the world where I felt I was loved by who I was. I didn't need to prove anything to anyone, specially around my sexual orientation.

And that's one of the many reasons I have planned the Panel Discussion Parenting & LGBTQIA+.

We can talk about.
We can educate.
We can raise awareness.
We can reduce all the sad statics surrounding LGBTQIA+ youth.
We can celebrate Scotland as a place of inclusivity.
We can build a better Q***r History. Today.

Joining us on the panel, for the first half of the evening, we will also have Dr Abbie Goldberg. Dr Goldberg is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, where she also currently serves as the Director of Women’s & Gender Studies, and is the current holder of the Jan and Larry Landry Endowed Chair (2020-2023).

Dr. Goldberg is an internationally recognized scholar, speaker, and consultant, who is regularly interviewed by media outlets including the New York Times, The Atlantic, the Boston Globe, and New York Magazine. Her research examines diverse families, including LGBTQ-parent families and adoptive-parent families, as well as the experiences of marginalized groups such as trans youth. A central theme of her research is the decentering of any “normal” or “typical” family, sexuality, or gender, to allow room for diverse families, sexualities, and genders.

Dr. Goldberg is the author of over 140 peer-reviewed articles, over 25 book chapters, and four books: LGBTQ Family Building: A Guide for Prospective Parents (APA; 2022), Open Adoption & Diverse Families (Oxford; 2020), Gay Dads (NYU Press; 2012), Le***an and Gay Parents and their Children (APA; 2010).

Matt joins us as one of Pink Saltire] Community Support Workers, who has recently worked on delivering the LGBT+ Hub Study in Perth & Kinross, as well as co-ordinating a new Rainbow Heartlands programme for the region. He identifies as pansexual, after some time questioning his sexuality throughout university some moons ago!

Previously, he has led on the LGBT+ Society at the University of Gloucestershire, and volunteered with the LGBT+ Partnership in Gloucestershire to help improve awareness.

Since moving to Scotland in 2019, Matt joined Pink Saltire as one of their ‘Rainbow Responders’ officers.

Alongside this, Matt loves long walks, photography and listens to music around the clock! ❤️🌈

The aim is to share the personal stories and help others who might be going through the same circumstances.
