Three weeks to go until the much-loved Bookmark book festival returns for 2024! 📕🤩

Next in the line up for the weekend is Allan Radcliffe and Zoë Strachan, writers of fiction whose work cover themes of family, the past and changing landscapes. Allan’s book, The Old Haunts, was featured on BBC Radio 4’s Book at Bedtime: Zoë’s latest novel, Catch the Moments as They Fly, is her fourth book; she also teaches Creative Writing at Glasgow University. 🖌

In this lecture, Professor Jane Geddes will discuss the iconography of two undoubtedly similar scenes and compare Byzantine sources showing the Arming of David by Saul. She will also explore similar scenes from the ninth to thirteenth centuries to understand how the evolution from a shepherd boy to a mighty king took place.

Our partners Culture Perth and Kinross have revealed their next temporary exhibition at Perth Museum, Waters Rising, which will explore how flooding and climate breakdown have impacted Perth and Kinross, Scotland and the world. 🌏💧

Opening on Fri 8 Nov, the exhibition will trace stories and objects connected to flooding from Scotland and abroad and will also highlight the growing threat of the global climate emergency, examining the impact of flooding and extreme weather events.

Chansons, Perth’s Chamber Choir, join with Ars Antiqua Kammerchor from Aschaffenburg, Perth’s twin city in Germany for a Summer Concert. Ars Antiqua have also brought their youth choir on this return visit for a musical celebration of the friendship of both cities. Amongst others, the concert will feature music by Holst, Hindemith, Brahms, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Vaughan-Williams. The choirs will perform individual items before joining together for a celebratory end to the evening.

This upcoming art talk at Perth Art Gallery will be sure to get Perthshire's aesthetes inspired! 🎨

Despite a 50-year age difference, artists Bet Low and JD Fergusson had a surprising crossover in their careers. These connections emerged after Fergusson returned from France at the outbreak of the Second World War and chose to live in Glasgow. This year, 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of Bet Low’s birth and in this talk, Hildegarde Berwick will explore Bet Low's work and the connections between these remarkable Scottish artists.

2024 marks the 200th birthday of the Marshall Monument (the oldest part of Perth Art Gallery), and the 150th birthday of JD Fergusson, whose works have been newly reinterpreted and displayed. Come and also celebrate the grand opening of our newest temporary exhibition, The Fleapit Theatre, designed and curated by the Culture Perth & Kinross Youth Collective. This is an immersive, interactive journey through the history of local cinema.
