We had a great day at Mid Devon Show today. Thanks to the volunteers who took shifts on our stand to talk to people about the theatre. We also had over 100 questionnaires completed that will help us create the programme of events local people want. The winner of the draw has been contacted. Well done to the organisers for another successful year!

How many goodly creatures are there here!

Hannah Cowley is a fascinating figure from Tiverton's past, but one that we sadly have very little about in the museum.

A famous playwright in her day, Cowley has faded from public view, so we were really pleased to see one of her most popular works being brought back to a Tiverton stage by Tiverton Community Arts Theatre on Saturday 29th June.

Hannah Cowley rose to national fame with her play Runaway taking the London stage by storm in 1776, featuring some of the day’s most popular performers. Cowley was a pioneer feminist and her work often ridiculed arranged marriage, questioned the conventions of a male-dominated society and championed women’s rights.

She was the toast of the town in her day, mixing with the rich and famous. Her likeness was captured by fellow famous Tivertonian, Richard Cosway, the acclaimed miniaturist. The Belle’s Strategem, of 1780 received a Royal Command performance and Queen Charlotte’s accolade, so it’s brilliant to see it being revived as ‘Love Riot’ and brought back to Tiverton for a modern audience.

This portrait of Hannah Cowley, pictured here in our store, is a Richard Cosway from 1785, and shows her holding a book, the symbol of her profession.

Head to TCAT's website to book: https://tivertontheatre.com/
or pop in to see us here at the TIC to book (with no booking fee!).

On the trail of Tiverton's Hannah Cowley and a chance to win tickets for the performance.
On Saturday 29th June 2024 we welcome Miracle Theatre with "Love Riot" a play based on Hannah Cowley's Belle's Stratagem. Hannah Cowley was born in 18th Century Tiverton and went on to write many plays for the London theatre. With the aid of Carrie Thomas at Tiverton Tourist Information Service and Jeremy Salter of Tiverton Civic Society we began our mission to find out more about one of Tiverton's most notable daughters. Our search began at Tiverton Museum and ended at a plaque in the town to the famous lady. But your detective work starts here, where in Tiverton is the plaque pictured below? A free ticket to the quickest response here. Thanks to Jeremy and Carrie for helping TCAT volunteers Jon, Steve, Peter and Julian in their quest.
