⏰ Just over one week till the deadline ⏰

Arts Centre Washington is delighted to present an open call to artists for Washington Open Exhibition 2024: Spotlight.

Spotlight is Arts Centre Washington’s annual open exhibition. We invite submissions from artists based in North East England working in a range of mediums, including two-dimensional media, sculpture, textile, ceramics, glass and moving image. People from all backgrounds and levels of experience are encouraged to apply, from amateurs to professionals.

This year we would like artists to respond to the theme of ‘past reflections and future visions’ – this can be interpreted in many ways.

We’ve had a last minute addition to our Washington: Fact, Folklore and Fiction exhibition. Roger Morris has very kindly contributed two pieces of artwork from two of Washington’s finest homegrown artists, both sadly passed, alongside some research into their lives and work.

Laurie and Paul Stangroom are a father and son pair of artists, who lived just up the road from Arts Centre Washington for some years. Paul grew up playing around the crumbled ruin of the farmhouse pre-renovations.

While Paul moved around the world, finally settling in Madiera, Laurie played an unsung but important part of our regional history. You may have seen his work at Beamish or used to illustrate civic projects developing the Newcastle Quayside. If you are a long-term Washington resident, you may even remember him sketching or painting from life along the riverside.

A message from Sunderland Culture’s Chair, Jane Earl:

We have been deeply saddened by what has happened in Sunderland, across the region and beyond over the past week.

Sunderland is a warm and welcoming city where people have always looked out for each other. Through our cultural programme, we seek to create connectivity amongst our communities, and we stand by communities across the city who have been impacted by the recent occurrences.

We want to reassure everyone that our venues and programmes remain inclusive, open and welcome to all who wish to enjoy, experience and share creativity and culture with everyone else.
