Premises License: we hit another big milestone this week as we got our provisional premises license approved for alcohol on sales from our licensed bar at Blackshaw Barns and off-sales from our on-site microbrewery (Blackshaw Brewery). Another amazing step forward in our family journey. Thank you for all of the wonderful local support and the support of our amazing couples who believe our vision ❤️

Exciting update from our on-site microbrewery!

Blackshaw Black

Introducing Blackshaw Black, paying homage to Blackshaw Farm and the brewery’s origins. The first beer had to be black, and so began the journey of crafting this unique brew.

The recipe started as a robust porter, but we wanted to amplify the roasted character from the barley and add more complexity, so came change to the roasted malts and the introduction of oats. The result? Blackshaw Black—a beer that sits comfortably between a robust porter and an oatmeal stout.

For the history buffs, oatmeal stout dates back to the early 1900s when it was known as a ‘nourishing’ stout, using oatmeal in the grain mix. Unlike the later sweet stouts made with lactose, these brews relied on oats for their distinctive character. Original Scottish versions used a significant amount of oat malt. Later we went through a shady phase where some English brewers would throw a handful of oats into their stouts in order to legally produce a ‘healthy’ Oatmeal Stout for marketing. Blackshaw Black features a generous, intentional amount of oats for a truly rich experience.
