A friend sent a text right after my dad passed away- This friend had met Dad once but didn’t really know him. But still, she knew I was hurting.

Will you be home at 8:30 tonight?

Yes, I replied.

She said, “Instacart will be there at 8:30. Open the door for them.”

“What?”
“Grief Groceries.!!”

When Instacart showed up, they put two large bags of groceries on my porch. Frozen pizzas. Ice cream. Oreo cookies. Tinned soup. Stouffer’s lasagna. A gallon of milk. Like that. Things I could heat up if I needed a meal, or pig out on if I needed fat and sugar. Sometimes, you just need to eat half a box of Oreos.

Notice she didn’t ask if I needed any food. I would have said no. She just asked if I would be home.

So, I guess what I’m saying is, don’t ask grieving people to make big choices or decisions. “How can I help” is a big choice. But “Can I take the kids this afternoon so you can have some time to yourself” is a much smaller one. “Will you be home tonight?” is a small choice. “What restaurant do you like” is a small decision. Just showing up to cut their grass because you noticed it needed cutting is loads better than asking, “Do you want me to cut the grass?” Or, “I’m going to Target. What can I get you while I’m there?” is better than “Can I run any errands for you?”

It won’t always be like this. If you stick around, eventually they will surface and ways to be helpful will make themselves known. But in the first few days, especially, it helps to remove as many decisions from their plate as you can!”

Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire.

The Good Life kitchen is located in the Carlow home of Natalie Cassells which she shares with her husband, their 2 daughters Mischa & Layla & their sausage dog Nixon (The hairy brother), Grandpa Jim and Abuelita Dally. With the kitchens blush pink island and relaxed vibe you will surely feel right at home. Natalie is her husband’s “American souviner” brought home from New Jersey in late 2002. Natalie had been a buyer in the clothing industry of New York but happily left that to take on Ireland with lock, stock and two smoking suitcases. Always having had a love affair with cooking, Natalie started up a small catering business in Dublin called the Artichoke And The Olive, but once their 2 daughters came on to the scene in 2007 it was country living for the Cassells family. Thats when they moved to the family farm in Rathvilly & Natalie began SugarRush occasion & wedding cakes. Through the cloud of sweet icing sugar she realised her dream to teach, so her cookery classes began. Now, after living the caravan life in her back garden for 6 months while renovating their home, she is now ready to launch THE GOOD LIFE COOKERY SCHOOL. Natalie has revamped her kitchen to accommodate the perfect sized crowd of hungry kids &/or adults. As anyone who has met Natalie knows- she has a love for life, food, entertaining and fun. As she does nothing by half measures, you never know when food will literally come flying though the air your way or what surprises she has in store for you. But the one thing you can be sure of is that you will always leave The Good Life Cookery School with a full stomach and a smile on your face. So come along and join Natalie on her quest to fill your belly with delicious food & fill your heart with laughter.
