Isn't that an enjoyable sight. I had to sit and admire it. Thanks to our Kiwi guests who left behind the cost of the 2 new tap sets I'd just replaced. Leaving their mark in history. We really do get THE best guests. Thank you Nathalie and Kevin, it was our pleasure to host you. I'll remember you every time the taps DONT drip any more!

This day 5years ago was one of the sadest but most beautiful days of my life. When my dad got diagnosed and told his cancer was terminal with only weeks left, his reply was 'I thought I'd have more time and see the boys married'

We pulled together that wedding in 2 weeks. Unfortunately dad didn't make it that far. But that's his chair and his hat front row. We felt every bit of his presence. And and are still my favourite couple that blessed Ballybur with their love and commitment that day. Dad would be proud.

A little late BUT a very important one in our family history and also our little country's. Our 1st same s*x marriage since Ireland people proudly voted a resounding YES. And it just happened to be my wonderful brother Ruan and his Robert.
A little back story that many won't know. When my dad got his terminal diagnosis in March 19 and was given a short few weeks, the 1st thing he said was 'I thought I'd see the boys marry'.

As our family gathered together to spend time with Dad, we decided to throw ourselves into making it happen for him. We picked a date 3 weeks out and with the help of some amazing suppliers we pulled off the impossible.

Heartbreakingly though, Dad tried his best but was too poorly, he passed away a mere 11 days before. For us though, the wedding pulled is through those horrific days and it still felt like he was there with us, actually he was. Here he is with the grooms!

And to R&R, I knew back then that you 2 were meant for each other. What you came through in that month alone was binding. And that's what love is; support, being there for each other, even in tears and heartache.

Happy belated 4year anniversary to my love idols!!!

Right in my primary school!!!

GALLOWS AND GIBBETS. In September 1969 county council workers were quarrying from a sandpit beside the scout den on the Bennetsbridge road when suddenly ‘thousands’ of human bones fell out from the side of the cutting. These were packed up in bags and some ended up in the National Museum of Ireland. One of the bodies was examined and found to be an adult male of unusually strong build, over six feet in height and about 30 years old. Since the name of the townland is Gallows Hill, and a large tree in the area also bears this name, some of the bones may have been the remains of unfortunates that were executed here. However many of the bones were mixed up (‘disarticulated’) and could have suffered a grisly end in a gibbet, a gallows-type structure from which dead bodies were hung on public display to deter criminals. In the medieval period ex*****on sites, such as this, were often placed on the outskirts of towns.

Just got a little notice on an article in the Examiner. It was 2 weeks ago so no copies now but nice little one on the challenges of keeping an old tower house alive. Lovely to see the Tullaun Castle feature too. Really need to make my way for a visit there.

I think it's safe to say we get some of the best guests here at Ballybur Castle. The lovely Pavelski family brought us on a lovely boat tour they took of Kilkenny. The kids now have a new bestie all the way over in Wisconsin ❤️

Sooooo excited!!!! Our booking system is only back up and running last week until the end of August and I'm so thrilled to see our International guests among the families choosing to rent Ballybur Castle for their holidays. We have been so massively affected by travel restrictions that it just feels extra special to getting back to welcoming people back to our amazing Kilkenny City.

There's a great story behind these beds. Because Ballybur is a Norman Castle, deco from the 16th century can be rare. Its always been hugely important to us to keep that authentic feel about the place. True to its roots. So while on holiday in France one year my mam and dad spied these beds in a derelict house. (What do you mean no-one else's family peeked in the windows of fally down buildings?? It's normal!) They found out where to buy them and they were dismantled and hauled into the back of the high ace beside yours truly and Co (and a couple of cases of French wine!) to travel back home!!! How beautiful are they though?
