Our last createTALK went very well last few days. Although a bit of hickups especially on technical part and caused a bit of delay, we managed to pull it off. Thanks to the dedicated team of usm.create, , and team for resolving the issue.

Our appreaciation goes to Assoc. Prof. for agreeing to be the panel of this talk. Although the time is short, but the content was deep, enlightning and engaging. Also, for allowing us to use the museum as the set for the talkshow. As you all can see, such beautiful set surrounded by artworks of the lecturers from the curated by two amazing women Dr. Tetriana Fauzi and Dr. Safia Najwa. ♥️

From Penang, Malaysia, we flew these 2 ladies to Malaysia Pavillion, Dubai to conduct a pocket talk with the title “Conservation needs Conversation: USM’s Public Engagement with the Challenges of Sustainable Palm Oil” where we'll be discussing sustainable palm oil and its issues.

Introducing the panel, Dr. Nadine Ruppert from School of Biological Sciences USM. Nadine is a zoologist and conservation biologist, leading groundbreaking research on Malaysian primates. Her discovery of rat-eating macaques in oil palm plantations playing a vital role as biological pest control has made global headlines with more than 80 million readers in 2019. She co-founded the Malaysian Primatological Society, a registered NGO responsible for primate and habitat conservation and environmental education and is its current Vice President. She is the co-founder of the Sustainable Palm Oil Movement, and co- produced “It’s not the oil, it’s the practice” and a video documentary “50 Shades of Green: The Complex Story of Palm Oil”, in which she appears as leading character.

Established in 2019, Sustainable Palm Oil Movement (SPOM) is an initiative under the collaboration of Universiti Sains Malaysia and the umbrella of the Malaysian Primatological Society to address misinformed anti-palm oil campaigns by improving consumer knowledge and public awareness on issues surrounding palm oil and advocating for sustainable palm oil and greener practices to protect biodiversity.

Hosting the event will be Andy Siti
Creative Events & Communication Manager USM.CREATE and also a senior cultural officer from Dewan Budaya USM.

Feminism is a social viewpoint that advocates for equality and equal rights for both sexes, male and female. Millions of feminists fighting for equal rights around the world have used and continue to use this social perspective. In the last century, the feminist movement has gone through three waves, changing the face of the human race as we know it. It has shifted social norms and stereotypes of typical gender inequality that are embedded in daily practises.

GEORGE TOWN FESTIVAL | IBUKI HATI: JAPANESE FLUTE AND CONTEMPORARY DANCE | 4–5 DECEMBER 2021

Ibuki Hati presents an hour-long concert featuring Japanese music and contemporary dance. Initiated by the choreographer and dancer Aida Redza and the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) player Andrew MacGregor, the narrative of the concert is carried by six pieces of music arranged in two parts, each interpreted through original dance performances. The first part features ‘Dokuso Shakuhachi no Tame no Ni Sho’ (Two Movements for Solo Shakuhachi), ‘Ichijo’ (Certainty), ‘Ai for Shakuhachi and Strings’ and ‘Aki no Kyoku’ (Autumn Fantasy), and is performed by Andrew MacGregor, Quattro Voce String Quartet and Zhang Chi; the second part presents ‘Tanah Pusaka’ and ‘Village of Camellias’, featuring keyboard–bamboo flute by Lee Jia Wei and Andrew MacGregor.

This unique concert is a true meeting of cross-cultural creativity in an innovative celebration through music and dance. The inspiration draws on the core elements that are immersed in these performing arts: breath (ibu), vital force (ki), heart (hati) – a breath of the heart or Ibuki Hati. By presenting the interplay of music and dance movement – as in a three-dimensional conversation – the concert offers a unique aesthetic and cultural experience, and suggests the intertwined emotions of sorrowful longing and yearning for a renewed world, embodied in the breath of the flute and the breath of the dance.
