These days the Castrol Toyota Racing Series is most commonly recognised as a hotspot for European young guns wanting the ultimate winter test regime. But in the category’s early years it was almost solely a Kiwi driver affair.

The category’s alumni from its early era was still nothing to sneeze at. True to its current ‘Finding New Zealand’s Next World Champion’ tagline, the series played a big role in the early careers of the likes of Brendon Hartley, Shane van Gisbergen, Earl Bamber, Chris van der Drift, Wade Cunningham, and more.

And, all of them got beaten at some point in time by arguably the quickest driver in the old Toyota-powered Tatuus TT104ZZ, Daniel Gaunt. For a period the Aucklander drove open-wheelers of all kinds, ranging from Formula Fords to Australian Formula Holden, to a brief stint pedaling Champ Car Atlantic and Indy Pro entries in America. Along the way he grabbed two TRS titles and two New Zealand Grand Prix victories, placing him in highly exclusive company.

Gaunt’s career pivoted from the American dream to Aussie tin-tops via Porsche Carrera Cup competition on both sides of the Tasman. In arguably the halcyon days for single-make Porsche racing down under, Gaunt was always at the pointy end; bumping doors with the likes of Craig Baird, Fabian Coulthard, Jonny Reid, Matt Halliday, and future Aussie flatmate David Reynolds.

The days of Triple X Motorsport versus McElrea Motorsport and International Motorsport were full of incredible tales, and Gaunt was often somewhere in the middle of them all. He was unlucky to not emerge with more than just the one domestic 2010-’11 Porsche title.

The talented racer’s career trajectory inevitably saw him take on the Supercars world, first via a Super2 campaign with Stone Brothers Racing in 2009 followed by a cameo at that year’s Bathurst 1000 in SBR’s sister car alongside Shane van Gisbergen and John McIntyre. Gaunt progressed to a full-time seat in the series in 2010 with the then-new Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport (LDM) single-car squad, departing the team before the season had finished.

Gaunt’s fleeting Supercars career is one of the many ‘what ifs’ in New Zealand motorsport. His progression to the top-flight series was quicker than most, and in those early days LDM would become known for its driver turnover rate. Had things come together differently, who knows where Gaunt’s career could have gone.

In the years since his last Bathurst 1000 appearance in 2013, Gaunt has become known for being a safe pair of hands with pace to boot in endurance racing. While his day-to-day life is mostly occupied by his running of the Game Over Auckland family go-karting facility in Albany, Auckland, he’s still putting in the odd star performance behind the wheel.

A surprise mid-race call-up saw him score a stunning Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour class victory in 2018 with Grove Racing. Even more recently, he was denied a potential third New Zealand Grand Prix win by an errand safety car and the remarkable exploits of his dear mate SVG.
