The pruning phase is complete.

When laying down the canes by winding them around the fruiting wire, you often hear a cracking sound. As long as the cane doesn't break, that's a good sound.

Cracking helps stimulate the vine into starting the sap circulating. This begins the shooting phase.

In these photos you can see a drop of sap forming at the end of the cane, and a bud swelling up.

Budburst is coming, and with it, the start of vintage 25!

Mike Taylor wasn’t always a fan of wine.

“Until age 32 I was tea total, mainly for athletic reasons. On a truck trip in Africa, after a very good day, my good friend and his wife poured three glasses of an aged port to celebrate.

I suppose that was the genesis of my philosophy that what we are creating in a bottle of wine is a little bottle of happiness!”

Unfamiliar with grape growing, Mike and Christy pressed on, under guidance of experts, learning from them, and gradually growing the expertise and confidence to do it themselves. Like true artisans really.

The key for Mike is producing quality grapes and collaborating with the winemaker always with the end wine in mind.

And Mike has not failed in delivering on happiness, having won numerous awards over the last 17 years, including his latest award winning Syrah ‘The One’.

Their philosophy: if it's worth doing, heart and soul go into it.

A wine lovers dream:

Christmas morning, unwrapping the customised wooden box. Sliding open the lid. Under the rose gold tissue paper is a tall elegant bottle of the best syrah in New Zealand. Two gold medal stickers and two champion medal stickers are shining alongside the shining rise gold words The ONE.
It's a treasure.
Then imagine the moment of opening, pouring, savouring the best wine of any variety in Auckland.

Vineyards don't grow as neatly as you see them.
Today's job was tucking and moving wires.
We do it so the vines grow straight up and are easier to manage. We can then get the tractor down the rows without breaking any vines.
But I do like the nice tidy effect.

Bush walking at the weekend. Stopped to notice the moss. Easy to zip past, but it really is quite lovely. Like a mini masterpiece. I suppose all nature is like that - beaitiful and essential, but easy to ignore. The International panel on climate change report says we mustn't.
