Who is Mrs Hucks?
Isabella Lavery, born in Victoria in 1866. At 23 she married Harry Hucks and they later moved to Christchurch with their four daughters and son.
About 1909, she was hired as a chef at the Theatre Royal Cafe. She soon became sole proprietor “‘Mrs. Hucks’ Theatre Royal Cafe”. Her customers grew fond of her and she became known as ‘Mother Hucks’
At the end of World War I, Isabella had loaned the Ozone Cafe to the Veterans’ Association for a year, paid the wages of a caretaker and his wife and even sent soup to Nurse Maude on Madras Street.
We loved the story of Mrs Hucks so much that we named our humble eatery and events space after her.
