Pinoy History

Throughout his stint as president, Laurel tried to solve the problems of the Philippines to alleviate the people's sufferings. When Japanese surrendered to America on August 15, 1945, Gen. Douglas MacArthur ordered his arrest for collaborating with the Japanese.

In 1946, he was charged with 132 counts of treason, but was never brought to trial due to the general amnesty granted by President Manuel Roxas in 1948.

In later years, Laurel ran and lost for presidential elections against Elpidio Quirino in 1949. He was elected to the Senate in 1951.

During President Ramon Magsaysay's term, he became head of a mission tasked with negotiating trade and other issues with United States officials, the result of which known as the Laurel-Langley Agreement.

He retired from public life, concentrating on the development of the Lyceum of the Philippines established by his family.

Laurel died on November 6, 1959 at the age of 68.

Today, March 9, is Laurel's birthday

Pinoy History

Ang Oblation, isang iconic symbol of the University of the Philippines. a man facing upward with arms outstretched, symbolizing selfless offering of oneself to his union.

Fashion and clothing style in the Philippines have been influenced by their native ancestors, the Spanish colonizers and the Americans, as evidenced by the chronology of events that occurred in Philippine history.

The Marรญa Clara gown, sometimes referred to as Filipiniana dress, traje de mestiza or simply terno, is a traditional dress worn by women in the Philippines. It is a form of Baro't saya. It takes its name from Marรญa Clara, the mestiza protagonist of the national epic Noli Me Tangere, penned in 1887 by Filipino nationalist Josรฉ Rizal.

Barong tagalog (a formal garment, often made from thin fabric and richly embroidered) is used both by men and women. It looks like a tunic or shirt with long sleeves and is worn over a usual shirt. Filipino men often wear barong tagalog with a Chinese collarless shirt (called "camisa de Chino"). Barong tagalog can turn European-style clothing into Filipino easily.

Apart from colonial influences and media influence, the Filipino style of clothing had been dictated by the climate in the Philippines. With a tropical climate (dry and rainy seasons), early Filipinos โ€“ as well as the still extant tribal groups in the Philippines โ€“ wore colorful woven clothes, often with intricate beadwork and other ornaments. Other items of native clothing during pre-Spanish Philippines were the canga and the bahag. The canga is a type of a collarless shirt โ€“ which later became adorned with laces, trimmings, buttons, and a collar โ€“ was where from the Barong Tagalog evolved. On the other hand, the bahag was a type of loincloth or G-string.

Trait that endears the Filipinos more to the rest of the world?

Filipinos are renown all over the world for their hospitality and heart-warming generosity. They accommodate guests and even strangers in such a warm and pleasant way. Even before the Philippines was colonized by Spain, this trait was already practiced by our ancestors. The Datus warmly welcomed foreign people who, at that time landed in our country to barter and trade. Spaniards were also treated in the same way when they first came, and the good relationship between both parties lasted before things got out of hand.

Up until now, Filipinosโ€™ great hospitality is still practiced. Whenever guests arrive at their homes, they do almost everything just so the guests would feel most comfortable. One of the family members would offer them slippers so theyโ€™d feel warm and relaxed. Of course, as soon as they enter the house, the owner would offer them to sit on their most โ€œdurableโ€ type of chair to give them comfort, as well. This gesture wouldnโ€™t be complete without food to offer the visitors. But what if thereโ€™s not a single food left at home? No worries. Pinoys will always find a way. And they will do that much just so they can serve you, for free, nothing to expect in return.

Indeed, this trait runs in the blood of every Filipino. It has become part of our culture and lives, and I believe itโ€™s something we Filipinos should be proud of, something that we should take honor to the next generations.

Many of us, Filipinos , are superstitious, Maraming bawal! Sometimes we get surprised because of our lola or lolo will scold us for doing something we didnโ€™t know was wrong.

Can you still remember the common Filipino superstitions? Check out this list of native superstitious beliefs which became part of our culture.

(1)Donโ€™t trim your fingernails and toenails at night. Our ancestors believe that by doing this we attract the bad luck.

(2)Respect the elementals"
Filipino folklore is rich with a variety of elementals, from giants smoking to***co (kapre), to small, grumpy, old men living in anthills (Nuno sa punso). Stories of these creatures fill the childhoods of many Filipino children, inciting both intrigue and fear. Many superstitions still surround the beliefs in such creatures today. Among the most practiced is the saying of โ€œtabi tabi poโ€ (excuse me) when passing through places where elementals are likely to dwell.

(3)Sweeping the floor at night will drive away incoming blessings.
One of the popular Filipino superstitions our lolo and lola tell us is not to sweep the floor at nightโ€”no matter how dirty it is because it'll bring misfortune.

(4)Avoid getting a wound or injury on Good Friday because it will never heal.
Why so? Our grandparents tell us not to get hurt on Biyernes Santo because thatโ€™s the day Jesus Christ died.

No matter how young and modern you are, your superstitious blood still flows in your veins, because you're a Filipino with a race of a believer of superstitious beliefs.

Who else has a "Di makakalimutang Pamahiin" ? Feel free to share on the comment section below.

Long before online games amazed us, such as mobile legends with visually stunning content, we were just simple kids playing simple toys.

Back then, a group of children could easily find ways to kill time by using sheer creativity, strength, and enthusiasm.

Those days were so great that you'd never get bored, because of the countless traditional Filipino Games or indigenous games(Tagalog:laro Ng lahi) that was a gift from the past generation.

From do-it-yourself paper balls to exciting group games that donโ€™t even require toys like luksong baka, luksong tinik, patintero, and sungka, and we even played spider or "gagamba" and watched them fighting, From there and here we never ran short of fun things to do.

We cannot turn back the time, and be with those remarkable days but we can always look back and reminisce how simple things were back thenโ€“especially the toys and games of our respective generations. It made us who we are today.

Festivals mark the spirit of joy and celebration. They demonstrate the rich cultural heritage of the people, they help in bringing happiness and strength to the lives of people. Thus, by celebrating, they help facilitate this knowledge and tradition to be passed to the next generation.

Filipinos love to get together for a good time. Hardly a day goes by without there being a celebration somewhere in the country. Vibrant festivals characterized by lots of creativity, artistry, and passion last anywhere from one day to a full month.

These celebrations are hugely cultural, displaying the fun-loving spirit of Filipinos around the world. In these celebrations, the history, traditions, and spiritual side of the Filipinos come to the forefront.

One of the famous festival is the Ati-Atihan Festival. This religious festivity is one of the oldest Philippine celebrations. Thereโ€™s usually a frenzied parade on the streets where celebrants with colorfully painted faces and indigenous costumes come out for a fun-filled march along the streets of Kalibo.

Another celebration to honour the Santo Niรฑo is the Sinulog Festival or Santo Nino Festival. It is an annual religious and cultural festival in Cebu. The festival is thought to be the first of the most well-known festivals in the Philippines. It is held in celebration of one of the countryโ€™s most famous historic relics: the Santo Niรฑo de Cebรบ. This was the statue of the baby Jesus that was handed to the Rajah Humabon of Cebu by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. And it was one of the most important events in the religious history of the Philippines as it paved the way to the birth of Christianity in the country.

In our hometown, in Masbate, there is an annual event called the "Rodeo Masbateรฑo Festival" which takes place in Masbate City that showcases skills in livestock handling, such as lassoing, wrestling, and riding cattle. The event has taken place every summer since 1993 in the province of Masbate, which is traditionally considered the โ€œCattle Country of the Philippine".

Festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions. They play an important role to add structure to our social lives, and connect us with our families and backgrounds. And lastly, Festivalz were our ancestors way to pass the rich culture, knowledge and traditions onto the next generation.
