KAALAMANG PANG-KASAYSAYAN: SA ARAW NA ITO NG IKA-LIMA NG NOBYEMBRE ITINATAG ANG "PHILIPPINE RICE RESEARCH INSTITUTE" (PRRI)

It was established on November 5, 1985 by virtue of Executive Order No 1061 signed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Under the Executive Order, the PRRI (PhilRice) was tasked to "develop, in coordination with the University of the Philippines at Los Baños (UPLB), a national rice research program so as to sustain and further improve the gains already made in rice production, improve the income and economic condition of small rice farmers, expand employment opportunities in the rural areas, and ultimately promote the general welfare of the people through self-sufficiency in rice production."

Damage to agri from Tisoy now at P531.6M — Agriculture Dept.

The damage incurred by the agriculture sector from Typhoon Tisoy has reached P531.61 million, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said Wednesday.

"The initial damage and losses brought by the typhoon were reported in CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) and Bicol Region amount to P531.61M," the DA-Disaster Risk Reduction Management Operations Center said.

The volume of production loss due to the typhoon stood at 18,455 metric tons, which affected 14,637 hectares and 3,808 farmers.

The affected crops were rice, corn, and high value crops.

The DA-Regional Field Office CALABARZON has available 3,230 bags of rice seed reserves.

The Agriculture department Regional Field Office V (Bicol Region) also has available 3,163 bags of rice seeds, 2,632 bags of corn seeds, and 322 kilos of vegetable seeds to be distributed to the affected farmers who are ready to replant.

"The monitoring and field validation of the affected areas is currently being conducted by the concerned DA RFOs," the DA said.
