Laura on KRZA 88.7

Laura on KRZA 88.7 Volunteer DJ, connecting cultures along the Upper Rio Grande By the end of the 90's I was grown and I found myself in an office cubicle staring down adulthood.

Although the first pop song I clearly remember was "Micky" by Toni Basil, and although I could name any Top 40 Hit in four notes or less during the early 80's, I was not at all satisfied in the quality or imagination in the lyrics of hair bands and material girls. Admittedly, I formed a strange attachment to Phil Collins and by the late 80's I was firmly in the 70's with early Genesis, ELP, and ot

her Progressive Rock bands. As the 90's began to grind out more interesting and challenging music, I was able to rejoin mainstream music culture and enjoy bands like Counting Crows, Pearl Jam, and Live. I found my q***r and female empowerment to the tunes of Ani DiFranco, kd Lang, Tracey Chapman, and the Indigo Girls. I quietly found a web-based radio streaming service and slipped in my headphones. For whatever reason, I chose KGSR out of Austin Texas and my music world opened up in 10000 directions. I discovered there was more to music than what was played on commercial radio. KTBG, KPIG, KALX, and now KRZA: Community Radio is GOLD. In a time when commercial radio is increasingly dominated by a limited monoculture of the same sounds, community radio is our last hope for organic music discovery on the airwaves. I'm honored to share with listeners some of the gems I've found along the way, and also to promote new artists and new music from artists who are becoming the legends of their times.
