I had a great time last night at a dark sky presentation at Salinas Abo Mission near Mountainair, NM. During the summer and into Fall they do this on a night near the new moon. But, the new moon was the night before and I caught this cool photo of the moon just after sunset. I'll be back!

Monument Valley - Artist Point

"Dead Horse Point Sunrise - Painting"

Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab, Utah definitely is an unusual name for a park. It has been said that it got its name because cowboys of the 19th century used the area as a natural corral for horses. Due to the harsh weather in the area, horses often died of exposure. But, there is no disputing the beauty of the area. This vista view is one of the most popular of this area. I photographed this view at sunrise which does include some deep shadows but also highlights the multiple colors of the rocks and the river. This is the Colorado River just downriver from Moab and upriver from the confluence of the Green River, which is in neighboring Canyonlands National Park, which is being viewed in this image.

“Mesa Arch at Sunrise” 🟢 NOW AVAILABLE

Mesa Arch is located inside Canyonlands National Park, about 38 miles from Moab, Utah and 6 miles from the Visitor Center. Mesa Arch is famous for its sunrise in that just as the sun peeks over the horizon in the east, the light hits the red rocks on the west wall of the canyon and then bounces up into the underside of Mesa Arch...thus giving it a reddish glow. On this morning, we had monsoon storms in the area and a thunderstorm was approaching us from the west. On the eastern horizon, clouds actually blocked the sun at the official sunrise moment, but a few short minutes later, it peeked over the top of the clouds, creating the glow. It also passed through the rain that was over the canyon, giving us a double glow. Very cool. Oh, and yes, we did get rained on. But all was good!
