Ah, the glamorous life of an old lady flower farmer! Dealing with w**ds (mostly) "All by myself" at almost 67. πŸ˜―πŸ™„πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ˜„

Our already insane w**d pressure has gotten even insane-er with all the rain we've had the past couple of weeks.

This path to the shed was *clear* 3 weeks ago. --And if you think that's bad, swipe to the next photo of the area just beyond the path, that I hadn't w**ded since earlier in the season. Those w**ds were about the size the path w**ds are now, 3 weeks ago.

I wonder how much landscape cloth it will take to cover 21 acres? 🀣

Thought I'd share this funny from the today... A mom came by with her two young kids (probably around 5 & 7 years). They were busy, but good. They checked everything out and asked lots of questions. When the boy (the younger of the two) saw my dried flowers he asked, "Are these free since they're all dried up?" πŸ˜‚

AND (drumroll, please)... 505 Dahlias 2024 first bloom award goes to: Arabian Night!

This one surprised me! I have mainly been watching my twice overwintered in the ground rows because, for the most part, they are ahead of those overwintered once and/or new. But this eager dahlia is from one of the new-this-year patches! ❀️

What was (or what do you think will be) your first dahlia to bloom in 2024?

Whew! Hard to believe it was just over 2 weeks ago we had our last freeze! 😳

This is from our home thermometer. We are usually both a few degrees hotter in the summer and colder in the winter than the official in-town temperatures.

I'm almost finished planting dahlias!
..Only 1,107 to go. πŸ˜…

Okay, maybe "almost finished" was a *slight* exaggeration, but I am making progress! I haven't counted how many are in the ground at this point, but I'm planting them every day (along with the other, non-dahlia planting and chores.)

The first photo shows a couple of the 10 tables with dahlias in varying stages of hardening off on the patio. They are ALL out of the house now. Hallelujah!!!

The second photo shows one of my (planted) pot tuber / sink pot beds. This one's on the patio, too, with chicken wire around it to keep the dogs out! πŸ˜‚

Whew! Next time I'm asked to do a wedding in May (busiest planting month as it is, let alone this year's major dahlia expansion) tell me I'm crazy!

I'll agree with you, but most likely book it anyway! 🀣

I'm gonna be a little mean, here. Isn't this pretty? Well, you can't have one. 😁

I have been up to my eyeballs in The Great Dahlia Expansion of 2024, AND have a wedding I'm flowering in a couple of weeks, so I decided to downplay Mother's Day. I didn't even advertise, but I did take a few special orders. This is one of them. 100% grown on our farm. Although we have no more Mother's Day arrangements available for this year, remember, you can make a special order or book your wedding or event with us any time!

If you are blessed to still have your Mom with you, I hope you spoil her tomorrow! ❀️

I never thought I'd be putting the low tunnels up in MAY! πŸ™„ But, the next 3 nights will be well into freezing territory. I have been babying some of my overwintered dahlias to see just how early I can get blooms. I removed the plastic tarp a few weeks ago, but kept the straw. I keep piling extra straw on the plants when the temps dip, but they keep growing above it! The tips of some of the plants have already been nipped by frost and turned black, at considerably higher temps than is predicted for the next few nights, so tunnels it is! It was lots of fun putting them up in the wind, by the way, hence the slightly wonky look! πŸ˜‚

In other news, my early planting of sunflowers failed for the second year in a row, even *with* covering. Ah, well, such is farming (especially when you like to experiment and push the envelope to see what happens!) ☺️

Woo-Hoo!!! The first 8 trays of dahlias are out of the house! They are happy and so am I! Some of the tallest are bent over a bit from outgrowing the shelves, but they'll straighten up.

I "knew" (from study) it would take a *lot* of work to keep them happy inside the house for several months. But now I KNOW (from experience) how very true that is!

I have many more dahlia trays to follow (1,000+ plants of varying sizes), but first I have to plant out all the other stuff that's taking up every flat surface on the patio, to make room for the other dahlias!

Ranunculus are looking on track to provide plenty of blooms for Mother's Day AND the May wedding I have scheduled!

I have a lot more than I thought I would. I saved (non-patented) corms from last year, but wasn't sure how they'd do, so I also ordered new ones. Of course they all sprouted abundantly! πŸ˜…

One month ago I did an inventory of my "awake" dahlia tubers + the cuttings (and cuttings of cuttings) I had taken from them. I had 210. A month later? 467. Plus, I have hundreds more tubers ordered that haven't arrived yet, that I will also take cuttings (and cuttings of cuttings) from. And that doesn't include the ones I will start from seed.

Any guesses as to how many I will have by planting time in a couple of months? πŸ€”πŸ€£πŸ™„

Who needs a foyer / entryway, anyway? A seed starting & propagation area is a much better use of the space! Actually, almost everyone comes through the mud room door, anyway. And for the few each year who do come through the front doors, they still can -- they'll just be greeted by the plants that will be filling this space soon!

I still have to put lights on the racks on the right (had to order more). I have had the racks scattered here-and-there in previous years. I still have two more in the dining room, but since I (again!) increased the number of racks I'm using, it's nice to at least have these 6 all in the same area!

Okay, I'll admit it... I'm an old softie.

Each week at the market I take a bucket of "misfits and leftovers" to give away. And they are just that. A little worn or not quite right, but people love them.

Well, this week I used all the flowers I had harvested (except for a handful I am going to dry.) So, what did I do? Went out in the dark to harvest this bucket of zinnias and snapdragons, of course! 🀣

I just couldn't bear to disappoint those who look forward to their free flower each week. --Especially the adorable little ones who are "regulars". πŸ₯°

So stop by the tomorrow to get one of this week's "misfits and leftovers" ...that aren't! πŸ˜‚

Diva has gone wild! A full bucket from 3 plants. I had already used some before I thought to take a photo, plus couldn't get them all in the frame.

Sorry about the dahlia spam, but I'm saving up my photos & memories to get me through to next year!

Stop by the
tomorrow to get some Divas and other great dahlias (and other flowers), dried flowers and more. "Look for the turquoise tent!"

We'll have HONEY tomorrow, too!!! (Finally! Thanks for your patience!)

Pretty good, considering I haven't planted any in the past 2 years. It happily reseeds itself into a nice patch, but doesn't take over. Plus, it smells good!

Transitions...
These flowers have been through many transitions.

From seed to seedling, to young transplant, to first buds, to flower, to harvest and condition. With a lot of time, work and love at each step.

Today and tomorrow I have the privilege of helping these beautiful flowers transition once more. This time into WEDDING FLORALS!

There is something magical about nurturing every step along the way! I love being a farmer-florist!

(Note for locals: we will not be at the this week. Look for us on the 9th!)

We'll, it's supposed to get down to 5 degrees (F) tonight, and 1 tomorrow night (-15 / -17.2 C). So my ranunculus and anemones I planted in the wheeled, raised bed planters are as far under the patio cover as they can be, and covered with frost cloth, greenhouse plastic, towels, and blankets (multiple layers of each). And I said a prayer for them! πŸ™ It's all I can do. We'll see how they fare. I'll post an update in a couple of days.
