Dear Frontier Friends and Family ~

Change is afoot. Eighteen years ago I crossed the Frank J. Wood Bridge, sauntered into Fort Andross, and started on a journey called Frontier. That journey was inspired by my work leading cultural expeditions around the world. During those expeditions, I witnessed the profound impact storytelling has on communities. Stories are the lifeblood of a people—they expose the essence of a culture and provide for a shared identity. In all cultures, stories are shared in the “meeting spaces”. These spaces become touchstones for communities, and serve as vital conduits for exchanging thoughts and ideas.

Frontier has ultimately been a journey about building a community space. It is our sincere hope that after nearly two decades we’ve been able to demonstrate a care for and commitment to creating such a space, and with some blood, sweat, and tears, a dilapidated mill space can become a thriving community hub. And just as communities are always evolving, so too has this space. As we look ahead toward the next decade, it is time to hand over this community space to its next steward. Starting in October 2022, Frontier will be passing that torch, in its entirety, to Nomad.

I’m immensely thankful for the hundreds of individuals who helped build this space and the many hundreds of thousands who made it a destination over the years. Like any grand adventure we’ve traveled up, down, and sideways, but I can assure you we never strayed from our mission and we always sought to expand our impact. Speaking for the many who helped make Frontier a home for you over the years… we hope you were nourished, inspired, and cared for.

Nomad’s proven success, local focus, and commitment to community will enable them to pick up where we left off in the restaurant. They will also be reviving the event venue to host private events and community gatherings again. Regularly scheduled programming, such as film, music, and special events, will be on pause while Nomad gets established and settles into our community.

The next chapter in the Frontier story is uncharted, but our newsletter will remain active to keep you informed. In the meantime, some of our core staff and I will be assisting Nomad with this transition, so we encourage you to sign up for Nomad’s newsletter at https://nomadmaine.com/newsletter to get informed of all their future offerings. Please stay tuned.

Onward…Gil

Greetings Frontier Friends and Family ~

Frontier has always been an ever-evolving adventure—much like our own unique life journeys. There are times when we grow in profound ways and other times when we retreat in order to preserve and protect. We ebb and flow, and over time we change. Sometimes circumstances allow us to control change and other times we can only react.

The pandemic was a tipping point for change at Frontier. After eighteen years of near constant expansion, the pandemic forced us into a protracted period of preservation. This past two-year, mazelike journey fundamentally challenged our ability to gather people together around food, film, music, and art. Simply put, our business model needed to change. And so we evolve, once again…

We’re excited to announce a new restaurant will be opening later this summer! We’ve passed the food/beverage torch (along with our kitchen and dining room) to a new owner and operator, Nomad Pizza. Nomad specializes in wood-fired pizza and has been operating successfully for over 15 years in/around Princeton, NJ.

Nomad owner, Tom Grim, who now lives in Maine to be closer to his children and grandchildren, has long wanted to bring his wood-fired pizza north. He and Nomad partner, Matt Shankle, spent last summer traveling throughout Maine serving their wood-fired pizza from a mobile pizza truck, in search of a new home. As a long time Frontier customer, Tom always thought our space would be the perfect location for their wood-fired pizza. After a year of discussions, we agreed.

Our fundamental goal in finding a new owner/operator for the food service was to identify someone who shares our commitment to the community, supports local farmers, and would keep this special space accessible to the public. We found all this and more with Nomad. In addition to Nomad’s commitment to local/organic whenever possible, Tom’s son, Aaron, operates Cosmic Goat Farm and Creamery where he produces organic goat cheese & yogurt, and Tom’s son, Nicholas, operates Nomad Pasta, a producer of organic small batch pasta. We’re confident that Nomad will make a good steward, and we’re excited by the opportunities ahead.

Thank you for your patience while we’ve been working diligently during these last couple years to structure a sustainable way forward. Stay tuned for updates over the coming months, as we introduce you to Nomad. In the meantime, Frontier café, cinema, and event space remain open Weds-Sat 12-8 pm.

With Gratitude,
Gil and the Frontier Team

Go into virtually any bar, order a Negroni, Martini, or Manhattan, and you can expect the bartender to naturally start gathering the ingredients. You might even know to customize the order with a combination of adjectives like up, dry, or dirty. The bartender garnishes your drink, you take a sip, and *chef’s kiss. You continue on with your life, ordering Negronis at bars, never knowing that beneath it all, a selfless aperitif is tying your entire drink together. Never in the limelight, it gives your drink flavor and asks nothing in return. Well, not anymore! We are here to spread the gospel that is Vermouth!

Frontier is teaming up with Sopo Wine Co. and 93 Main to offer an instructional Vermouth tasting for those curious in learning more about the herbaceous aperitif. Sample vermouths ranging in origin from Spain to just down the road in South Portland! Learn about the history of Vermouth, the range of base ingredients, various aromatics, and best practices for enjoying the Italian born infusion. Pick your favorite of the samplings for a custom cocktail to close the tasting, and then, Cheers!
