'Bridge Messy, Emerge Ignited' ArtTalk
TODAY - Thurs. June 23
6:00pm
An evening with a range of artists featured in ArtVan’s 10×10 now on display at Frontier — how they create, value, and market their original works of art. Through storytelling, visual aids, and Q&A, artists share how art guides their professions, practices, including lessons learned along the way. Whether you’re an emerging artist, or have a lifelong practice, or maybe you hesitate to call yourself an artist, join us in the Theater to celebrate the many ways art supports our local community!
Free event, walk-ins welcome! Come on by!
NOW SHOWING: Hit The Road
Hit the Road follows a family of four – two middle-aged parents and their sons, one a taciturn adult, the other an ebullient six-year-old – as they drive across the Iranian countryside. Over the course of the trip, they bond over memories of the past, grapple with fears of the unknown, and fuss over their sick dog. Unspoken tensions arise and the film builds emotional momentum as it slowly reveals the furtive purpose for their journey.

Céline Sciamma continues to prove herself as one of the most accomplished and unpredictable contemporary French filmmakers with her follow up to PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE, the uniquely emotional, PETITE MAMAN. Following the death of her beloved grandmother, 8-year-old Nelly accompanies her parents to her mother’s childhood home to begin the difficult process of cleaning out its contents. As Nelly explores the house and nearby woods, she is immediately drawn to a neighbor her own age building a treehouse. What follows is a tender tale of childhood grief, memory and connection.

Go into virtually any bar, order a Negroni, Martini, or Manhattan, and you can expect the bartender to naturally start gathering the ingredients. You might even know to customize the order with a combination of adjectives like up, dry, or dirty. The bartender garnishes your drink, you take a sip, and *chef’s kiss. You continue on with your life, ordering Negronis at bars, never knowing that beneath it all, a selfless aperitif is tying your entire drink together. Never in the limelight, it gives your drink flavor and asks nothing in return. Well, not anymore! We are here to spread the gospel that is Vermouth!
Frontier is teaming up with Sopo Wine Co. and 93 Main to offer an instructional Vermouth tasting for those curious in learning more about the herbaceous aperitif. Sample vermouths ranging in origin from Spain to just down the road in South Portland! Learn about the history of Vermouth, the range of base ingredients, various aromatics, and best practices for enjoying the Italian born infusion. Pick your favorite of the samplings for a custom cocktail to close the tasting, and then, Cheers!

NOW SHOWING: Flee
In FLEE, the Grand Jury Prize winner at this year’s Sundance Festival, filmmaker Jonas Poher Rasmussen tells a poignant story of belonging and the search for identity. Amin’s life has been defined by his past and a secret he’s kept for over 20 years. Forced to leave his home country of Afghanistan as a young child with his mother and siblings, Amin now grapples with how his past will affect his future in Denmark and the life he is building with his soon-to-be husband. Told brilliantly through the use of animation to protect his identity, Amin looks back over his life, opening up for the first time about his past, his trauma, the truth about his family, and his acceptance of his own sexuality.

It’s *almost* the freakin’ weekend. Kick it off with an afternoon pick-me-up (and help some of us perfect our latté art skills—we’re getting there!)
Just a couple more weeks to see the Mill Works 3 exhibition. If you haven’t visited yet, don’t miss your chance to see (and purchase!) a collection of work by many of the artists with studios here at the mill—all in one place. Through a variety of styles, subjects, and mediums, this salon-style exhibition celebrates the local artist community here in Brunswick and serves as a fitting debut/welcoming back into our side of the mill after our very long hiatus. Come visit Frontier again!
And, while the kitchen is closed, our cafe bar is open with light fare from Wild Oats, Speckled Ax coffee, and local beer, wine, and cocktails. If you ask us, it’s kinda the perfect date spot. Grab a drink and peruse the gallery—and you can even catch a movie in our theater afterwards.
The last day to see Mill Works 3 is January 29th. Our hours are Wednesday-Saturday: 12-8 pm.
Congratulations to COLETTE, winner of the 93rd annual Oscar’s Documentary Shorts category. You can still watch the winners and all the nominees for each category for a little longer in our Virtual Cinema.
COLETTE follows former French Resistance member Colette Marin-Catherine as she travels to Germany for the first time in 74 years. Her visit is inspired by a young history student who enters her life and convinces her to visit the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp where her brother died at the hands of the Nazis.

In “Two Distant Strangers,” cartoonist Carter James’ repeated attempts to get home to his dog are thwarted by a recurring deadly encounter that forces him to re-live the same awful day over and over again.
