Looking for the perfect fit to join our floral design team at Kathy + Co Flowers, a florist and gift shop in Burlington, VT. Our shop prides itself on its carefully crafted and unique designs that stand out among the rest, and therefore we are looking for someone eager to uphold the same standard of quality and passion that we ourselves hold in our work.
We are looking for a part-time or full-time floral designer who comes with experience in everyday florals and sympathy florals, as well as experience taking orders both in-person and on the phone.
We would also consider training the perfect candidate to become a floral designer. No floral experience would be necessary - we only ask that you have a natural eye for colors and design, an eager attitude to learn, enough dedicated time to sufficiently train, and respond well and respectfully to instructions so that you may learn in a quick and proper manner. Applicant will be asked to perform other jobs within the shop as well in between training.
Job Description
- Experienced designers: design everyday florals and sympathy flowers while assisting customers via the phone or in-person with their questions or orders.
- Trainees: train under lead designers to grow in your knowledge of flower care, flower names/types/colors/prices, floral design, and other such elements of the industry. Also learn how to properly take orders from customers (in-person and over the phone) and assist them with any questions they might have.
- Plant knowledge is a big bonus, as we sell lots of those as well!
- Assist in various shop help tasks, including but not limited to watering plants, washing buckets and vases, restocking shelves, processing flowers, etc.
Desired Skills/Traits
- Hard-working
- Proficient computer skills
- Good customer service skills
- Team player, but can also be trusted to work independently
- Adaptable
- Focused
- Quick learner and a willingness to learn
- Reliable
- Analyzes own work and seeks out ways to improve it
- Can apply feedback in a constructive way and use it to improve designs and design skills
For fully independent and experienced designers, whom should be able to execute any design style to our shop's standard, handle phone calls, help customers, and accomplish most parts of typical day-to-day operations, wages will start at $17/hour (after an evaluatory trial period), but skill, speed, and independency will be compensated and wages will be adjusted higher for those that perform well in these areas.
Currently, our full-time designers have opted for "4 10's" (4x (approx.) 10-hour shifts per week, which allows for 3 days off per week). If this doesn't work for you, please let us know when applying and we can likely work something out with the traditional 5 days/week.
Training wages will be set at $12/hour during the period which you are taught this craft from us. After a measure of independence is achieved, wages will go up accordingly. Reaching this status could take anywhere between a few months to over a year - this is largely up to the trainee and their dedication to learning as well as any natural talent they might have for this craft. The level of independence we are seeking means, more or less, that you could be left alone in the shop and manage almost anything that came up, design-wise, customer-wise, or more, without needing assistance or management.
Our team consists of energetic and outgoing members. Camaraderie is very important within our company, as we find it important that one enjoys being a part of our team and also enjoys and takes pride in their work
Applicants must have reliable transportation to work, and must be available for daytime shifts and weekend shifts (weekend shifts are shared, so you will not be on every single weekend). However, if weekends are impossible for you for some reason or other, please bring this up when applying, and we can discuss how we can make your schedule work going forward. Availability around the holidays is required (Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. - we are closed on these actual days, but are busy in the weeks leading up to it), and must be available on/around Valentine's Day and Mother's Day (the "Superbowl" of the floral industry!)
Please submit:
- a resume
- a simple cover letter
- pictures of your work (experienced florists only)
Remote and in-person interviews are both available. Please note that we cannot accept applications and inquiries via phone or in-person at this moment - please only apply here or by email at [email protected]. Our staff cannot give you any more information on the phone or in-person that what's listed here, and they're just as busy as the rest of the world is right now!
We look forward to having you on our team!
