Cameron Mills has puzzled people for a long time, because of the fact that it's in Rathbone, not Cameron... the fruits from a long-ago shift of town lines. This fine photo of "the Mills" just misses the Canisteo River (it's below the bottom margin), but captures the parallel train tracks (Erie Railroad's main line at the time) and road (today Route 119). We can also see two Cameron Mills landmarks: the Methodist church (between tracks and highway, above the word "view"), and the old Crawford's store (the four-bay building with a cap and a long front porch, almost above "93"). The school would be out of sight to the right.

WE BOUGHT A CHURCH...

Two and a half years ago my girlfriend Autumn White and I bought a little house in Cameron Mills, New York. For scale, or maybe a brief explanation to why you may have never heard of Cameron Mills, NY we boast a booming population of 804 people. But this small town is BEAUTIFUL. Located right on the Canisteo River and nestled down in the valley between two breathtaking mountains, this area is something out of a magazine. We share the business district with our good friends at the Cameron Mills Market. Autumn and I fell in love with this little town and instantly knew this is where we wanted to dig our roots.

Right next to our newly purchased house was an old abandoned Church that was built in 1886. I am a sucker for old buildings and a serial entrepreneur so naturally my mind starting racing. We began contacting people looking to place an offer to buy the building. We finally came in contact with the organization that was in charge of the building and agreed to buy it before we had even looked at the inside because we HAD to have it.

About a month later during our house warming party we gave all of our guests a “tour” of The Church. During the tour Autumn and I pretended to stand on stand as if we were getting married and in that moment I got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. Then began the process of renovating...

The building was in rough shape. It had a leaky roof for quite sometime and by the time we saved up enough money it was leaking so bad inside it was like there was no roof at all. Luckily we were able to put the roof on before any substantial damage was caused. And then we began gutting the building...

It took about a year to gut, walls, ceiling... everything but the floor. Then began the long process of putting everything back together. We picked the day July 27th, 2019 for a day to wed. No big construction crew... just friends and family that wanted to shed some blood sweat and beers for a vision of two love birds. The last two weeks were a major push to get it done and we ended up finishing the main sanctuary the night before the wedding at about 11pm...

It was such an undertaking by two 20 and 21 year old kids but it ended in a fairy tale style wedding for two 23 and 24 year old young adults.

The Church will be a place of Love, Acceptance, Fun, Gathering, and Memory Making.

Enjoy,
Dalton and Autumn Cady.

Demo is DONE! I felt like this day was never going come. I can’t thank everyone that has helped us enough. Pretty hard to believe that these two pictures are the same building from the same angle. Thanks to Cadys Construction for all your help. This is a HUGE milestone and marks the halfway point of the project. 7/27/19 will be here before we know it!

The Town of Rathbone is located in the Canisteo River Valley between Addison and Cameron. The town was formed from parts of three other pre-existing towns: Addison, Cameron, and Woodhull, March 28, 1856. The town was named after General Ransom Rathbone who settled in the town in 1842. A special election was held at the house of David A Fulmers, May 6, 1856 for the elections of town officers. The first officers of the town were William R. Rathbone, son of Ransom, Supervisor; George W Young, Town Clerk; Israel Horton, Stephen Gloyd, Justices of the Peace. Demo day! Who’s ready to get married?!Plaster is on its way out. A lot of work but we definitely got a lot done in the first night thanks to our awesome family. The other two pictures I thought were cool because it’s probably the first time in who knows how long that people drove down the river road and saw lights on in The Church.

Today we went to our neighbor church down the road. The Town Line Church was established in 1845. It is such an awesome building and I encourage everyone to make a visit if you ever have the chance. I didn't take many pictures but the ones I did take still don't give this place justice. The wood stoves that are in there are an absolute work of art and were made in Troy, NY. The organ was a very nice piece as well. But what I was most interested in were the floorboards. To most they don't look like anything. But what I saw were the coolest unfinished wide plank boards I have ever seen. The widest board I found was at least 20 inches wide. I can't image the tree they used that could be squared up that big with the tools that had at the time. I still can't decide if I would finish the floors or leave them how they are if I owned it.
