As photographers, we understand that it probably took a lot for you and your family to plan and save to come to visit any given location. We get it. We're no different than you. We've got bills to pay, lifestyles to lead, and a business to run.

As some of us are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with you, I want to share a little something that is coming from someone who has been a professional in this industry for years from coast to coast, who has won awards for the photos I've taken, and from someone who is currently a photographer for the largest media outlet in the world.

On any given shoot, I bring to the location tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear. This can be an array of multiple cameras, lenses, lights, batteries, etc. In addition to the costs of these things is my insurance, cost of my websites, blah, blah, blah. However, I am not every photographer, and some bring and others bring less.

Get where I'm going with this yet?

When someone posts that they want an inexpensive photo session a couple things come to mind:

1. A new photographer who's wanting to make a name for themselves will jump at the opportunity to just shoot. They'll meet you with a warm welcoming smile and take let's say for example purposes 50 photos during your one-hour session with them.

2. Now they've got to go back while praying to whomever it is they pray to that at least a quarter of them are in focus and that everyone was smiling and looking at the camera.

3. When they finally get home, they'll spend a few hours going through their images, discarding the ones that aren't just any good, and keeping the ones that are good.

4. From there, another few hours are spent processing those few that are worthy removing any blemishes, taking away any hair flyaways, fixing the lighting, and making the landscape as pretty as possible.

5. During all of this, they're hoping that the images that they are processing are to your liking because if they're new to the business, chances are their confidence isn't at the tip of its spear yet, but that comes with time and trial and error.

6. So now, the photographer that you've paid $100 to has spent 4-5 hours just going through the wonderful images they captured with you; not to mention the one hour that they enjoyed with you and your family. And let's not forget the travel time to and from the location. So let's just say they're six hours into your $100 shoot.

I'm sure I'm missing a thing or two, but again to put this into perspective, this boils down to about $16.00/hour to capture and create timeless images that you can share with your friends and family after you depart.

All that I'm saying and asking with this is that you consider to dig down a little deeper for the starving artist. If you're expecting a $500 photo shoot for $100, don't hold your breath. Pay for their experience and not their time. Don't mention you only want 10-12 photos because we (photographers) know that only means you're looking for a budget shoot. For instance when I shoot, you're going to get ever photo from our session whether that's 12 photos or 50 photos. They're your photos. My hard drives appreciate me sending them to you.

Only a small fraction of the population isn't feeling the wrath of today's economy, so I totally get that budget is an issue. Unfortunately, from my experience, photography isn't always near the top on anyone's priority list. All that I ask is that in your planning to the shores, consider us photographers more on the priority. You will be, in most cases with a seasoned professional, be more than happy with having paid more for your photography session and chances are the more you pay, and if you like the work, the higher the chances you are to refer us to other friends and families who may be making a trip in the future.
