In honor of the closing of the 2024 Summer Olympics, check out these pictures of the first modern Olympics.

On April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I.
At the opening of the Athens Games, King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition.

While Chicago lost a bid to host the Summer Olympics in 2016, we do have the honor of being the first host of the Special Olympics on July 20, 1968!

1,000 athletes from 26 U.S. states, and Canada competed in track and swimming. Swimming had two events including 25 meter races, and track and field had four events including 50 yard dash, 300 yard run, and standing long jump.

Some of the smaller indoor events were held in the Conrad Hilton Hotel on Michigan Avenue. The event was co-sponsored by the Chicago Park District and the Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Foundation.

August 4th is National Friendship Day!

At DS Events we work as a team and learn from each other, often at the same time. Riley is the youngest member of our Operations Team and she brought her cool marble run set into the office to teach Shelby and Amy about the importance of encouraging girls in STEM!

Thank you Riley!!

Merry Christmas in July!

Christmas in July is usually recognized as July 25th. It began in the early 20th century as a way for the Southern Hemisphere to enjoy winter time celebrations, and as an ironic celebration in the Northern Hemisphere.

Here in the United States, it's a fun reason to celebrate cooler days, and a unique theme for a summer time event!

The 1996 Democratic National Convention was held at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, from August 26 to August 29, 1996. President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore were nominated for reelection.

It was the first time the national convention of either party was held in Chicago since 1968 and the first at the United Center, which was home to the Chicago Bulls during their epic championship run.

The 1996 DNC became a pop culture touchstone, with major product tie-ins, and many of the delegates danced to the song "Macarena". Al Gore famously danced to the song while standing still.

The 1968 Democratic National Convention was held August 26–29 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, United States.

The convention marked the tipping point of one of the most turbulent years in American history, which included the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, and civil unrest surrounding the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and Women's Liberation.

The 1952 Democratic National Convention saw the nomination of Governor Adlai Stevenson II of Illinois. One of the first televised conventions with campaigns purchasing television advertisements, it necessitated the outfitting of the International Amphitheater for the live coast-to-coast broadcast.

The International Amphitheatre was opened from 1934 and located by the Union Stockyards. It was also among the first arenas to be equipped with air conditioning. After an automobile swap show in March 1983, the venue closed its doors, although it clung to a second life as a sporadic sports arena and venue. The International Amphitheatre was demolished in 1999.

The 1944 Democratic National Convention was once again held at Chicago Stadium, and once again saw the nomination of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Because of the country's active involvement in World War II, FDR faced no real opposition to his 4th term as president. And Chicagoans and Chicago businesses all took up the cause. Including the Service Men's Center at Michigan and Congress, also opened in 1944, in the Auditorium Theatre building and the Dodge Chicago Aircraft Engine Plant.

Parts of this building now host the Tootsie Roll factory.

The 1940 Democratic National Convention was again held at the Chicago Stadium in Chicago, Illinois from July 15 to July 18, 1940 and saw FDR seeking an unprecedented 3rd term.

It was also the first time a first lady spoke at a DNC, with Eleanor Roosevelt speaking in place of her husband. FDR himself did not attend the event in person, wanting to remain coy about pursuing a 3rd term.

He gave his acceptance speech remotely from Washington DC shortly after midnight.
