Independence Day commemorates the Declaration of Independence.

To me, independence means freedom from limitations. My mother always told me that I could be whatever I wanted to be and that America was the best place suited to provide that freedom. I always trusted my mother and found out for myself what the American dream meant. Today I celebrate eight years since receiving my green card which eventually turned into citizenship in this amazing country. My story, though incredible, is like many more who have immigrated here to realize their own version of the American dream.

I want to thank everyone who played a role in my story from my family back home, to my new Chicago family and to people who I've come to meet around the US and around the world.

It’s Alexis Beckley, I don’t know if you remember me, but I used to regularly come into The Drake years ago for tea and hot chocolate with my family. I also celebrated my sixteenth birthday over tea and sandwiches at The Drake with your help 🙂 I moved to Los Angeles to go to college, which is where I still reside. Now, I’ve met my soulmate and we are engaged and planning our wedding. You were one of the first people I thought of when we were discussing where to have our reception. Where better than The Drake?

How have you been? I fondly remember every memory at The Drake, which was shaped by you. You always took such great care of us and made every experience we had there magical.

My fiancé and I are actors in Los Angeles, but my parents and extended family still live in Chicago so we come to visit often. We will be doing our first feature film together at the same time as planning our wedding so I found comfort in us choosing The Drake knowing you’d be part of the process. (We are hoping to plan our wedding for May 2022.)
