Very Interesting

The last total solar eclipse in Ohio took place in 1806 and is known as Tecumseh's Eclipse.

The eclipse was especially notable because it was predicted by Shawnee prophet Tenskwatawa (Tecumseh's brother). Future president William Henry Harrison had written (trying to discredit the Shawnee leader) "If he (Tenskwatawa) is really a prophet, ask him to cause the Sun to stand still or the Moon to alter its course, the rivers to cease to flow or the dead to rise from their graves."

Tenskwatawa responded "Fifty days from this day there will be no cloud in the sky. Yet, when the Sun has reached its highest point, at that moment will the Great Spirit take it into her hand and hide it from us. The darkness of night will thereupon cover us and the stars will shine round about us. The birds will roost and the night creatures will awaken and stir."

That day was June 16th, the date of the eclipse.

The eclipse was also notable because it was observed by Spanish astronomer José Joaquín de Ferrer, who gave the name corona to the glow of the faint outer atmosphere of the Sun seen during a total eclipse. Ferrer also stated that the irregularities of the Moon's surface were plainly discernible during the eclipse.

Chief Cornstalk (portrait from 1790) Cornstalk Town was located on the northern bank of Scippo Creek near the Scioto Trail on the Pickaway Plains. He was the primary war chief in the Lord Dunmore’s War (1774). He was an advocate for Shawnee neutrality in the American Revolutionary War(1775), though the British Armies tried to get them to fight against colonists to regain their lost land. He was killed at Fort Randolph near current Point Pleasant, West Virginia(1777). His remains are currently in the Mason County Courthouse and several parks have been erected in honor of his life and contributions to American history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornstalk

We found 4 more years of Gypsy Tour photos taken at Gold Cliff in the A.D. Farrow Harley Davidson museum in Sunbury with the earliest being 1939. We couldn’t make out the date on the top one. It may be 1949? The photos aren’t great but we hope that they will let us get nice copies for the park.
