In 1920, a young man by the name of H. Chapman moved to Cleveland, Oklahoma. Accepting employment with the King Furniture and Undertaking Company (located where the Cleveland Tag Agency and Munding Insurance Agency are today), Mr. Chapman dedicated himself to providing compassionate and considerate funeral service. Shortly after his arrival in Cleveland he married Thelma Deuel, whose mother Zulu,

operated the Merchants Hotel. They purchased the undertaking establishment from J. King in 1927, thus creating the Chapman Funeral Home. For the next three years, they operated the funeral home in a home near the First Baptist Church at 110 South Dunlap. In 1930, the Chapman Funeral Home was moved to the Dr. E. Robinson building at 110 North Broadway. Located in this building for nearly twelve years, they purchased and moved to the Meyer and Wise buildings (100 South Broadway) in 1942. Hugh and Thelma raised all four of their children: Betty, Billie, Frank and H. M., II in Cleveland. Upon graduation from the Chicago School of Embalming and his return from World War II, they hired Merle L. Black, Blackie as funeral director and embalmer. Merle had married their youngest daughter, Billie Lou Chapman in 1942. On May 28, 1949, the Chapman Funeral Home was relocated to its current location at 108 West Delaware with an open house to dedicate their new facility. During the next thirteen years, Hugh and Thelma with the assistance of Blackie and Billie, operated the funeral home and Clevelands ambulance service. Accustomed to working side by side with his wife, Mr. Chapman retired in 1962 after the death of Thelma, selling the funeral home to Merle and Billie Black. The Blacks continued to operate the family owned business for over thirty three years. The name was changed to Chapman-Black Funeral Home in 1965 at which time the city took over the ambulance service. In 1980 their youngest son, Gene, a ten year Navy veteran began the third generation of the family in funeral service. In 1996, a full service floral shop, Chapman-Black Floral Designs was added to extend our services to more fully meet the needs of our families.

Some ways to honor your loved one on their birthday, an anniversary date, holiday and more...
- Bring flowers to their final resting place, or simply go for a visit
- Listen to a voicemail they've left you or a video recording
- Do one of their "favorites" - watch a movie, attend their church, grab a scoop or two of their favorite ice cream
- Get creative - make art, sing, play an instrument
- Send part of their cremated remains to be made into a tree, jewelry, etc.
- Write them a letter
- Make a donation in their honor

“Grief is not a disorder, a disease or a sign of weakness. It is an emotional, physical and spiritual necessity, the price you pay for love. The only cure for grief is to grieve.” - Earl Grollman

In the funeral profession, a celebrant is a non-clergy professional that conducts formal memorials or celebration of life services. They are dedicated to conduct meaningful services that honor and remember a life lived. They can do so without linking to religious affiliation or beliefs, or include the deceased beliefs as requested. The message of their service includes unique sharing of how the deceased lived their life, their personality and values, and even memories from family and friends. Not only do they perform the funeral service, they actually plan and oversee all funeral proceedings. A funeral celebrant is there to help you decide on any and all details as you are arranging the funeral.

Ellen Orcutt

Ellen Sue Orcutt was born March 10, 1948, to Farris and Elouise Shipman in Alva, Oklahoma. Ellen passed from this world surrounded by loved ones on September 26, 2024.

Ellen was the eldest of 9 children. She was a loving sister, caregiver, role model, and friend to all her siblings. She attended Hallet and Cleveland schools and graduated in 1966. While in school, Ellen met the love of her life, Woody Orcutt. Ellen joined Woody in marriage on June 10, 1967. Ellen and Woody were pillars in the family, giving shelter and care to anyone in need. They moved to Gage, Oklahoma, to start their life together. While residing in Gage, they raised three children and began their home improvement business, "High Plains Siding." They were an active part of the Gage community, schools, and First Baptist Church for the rest of their lives. Ellen was a servant her entire life, and making food was one of her labor of love. We will all miss her delicious meals and sweet treats!

In the early 1990s, Ellen used her gift of cooking and baking to serve the Gage School children as their "lunch lady." Here, she served thousands of children and millions of meals and offered countless smiles, friendship, love, and prayers for all she encountered. Woody and Ellen always opened their home and kitchen table to those in need of a listening ear or encouraging words, and there was always something good to eat.

Ellen's life was a reflection of her faith in Jesus Christ. Her love for the Lord and people was evident in all she said and did. Strangers soon became friends, whether checking out in a store or negotiating a deal at one of her "gettin' places."

The Earth has truly lost a heart of gold. She is preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law Patricia Potts-Orcutt, father-in-law Bill Orcutt, sister-in-law Jody Orcutt, and brothers Elvin and Charlie Shipman. Ellen is survived by her children: JoAnne and Ashley Dartlon, Ben and Billie Orcutt, Luke and Anna Orcutt; grandchildren: Chelsea, Aidan and wife Brittany, Ryleigh and husband Sage, Mason, Baylor, and Barrett; great grandchildren Blake, Asharia; siblings, Jim and his wife Peggy Shipman, Sharon and her husband Tommy Parson, Thelma Campo, Linda Shipman, Martha and her husband Steve Buntin, Michelle and her husband Troy C**n; brother-in-law Jake and his wife Debby Orcutt and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Ellen will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She wants us to stay together and know the Lord so we can all meet again to have dessert first!

Our Story

In 1920, a young man by the name of H. M. Shortly after his arrival in Cleveland he married Thelma Deuel, whose mother Zulu, operated the Merchants Hotel. They purchased the undertaking establishment from J. S. King in 1927, thus creating the Chapman Funeral Home. For the next three years, they operated the funeral home in a home near the First Baptist Church at 110 South Dunlap. In 1930, the Chapman Funeral Home was moved to the Dr. E. T.
