Today's final performance of Florenica en el Amanzonas will be conducted by fellow graduating MM student Mariana Corichi Gómez. The El Dorado is in good hands this afternoon!

Mariana Corichi Gómez, Master of Music student in Orchestral Conducting, has distinguished herself in many ways during her time at the University of Maryland, including as assistant conductor of all MOS productions for the past two years. Not only was she the assistant to Professor David Neely on the opera being performed today, but she also acted as a language/diction advisor to the cast. Maestra Gómez has the added distinction of having recently been selected as one of two people worldwide to the Curtis Institute of Music’s Graduate Fellowship in Conducting as a student of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Music Director of The Metropolitan Opera and the Philadelphia Orchestra, where she will receive training in symphonic and opera repertoire.

It's the day of the (2nd) show y'all! Three more chances to head over to Loxford for May Day! Please join us!

For those coming to the show today, please attend the preshow lecture at 1:30p that explores complex themes of British nationalism, gender politics and cultural identity in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. This conversation puts the opera’s original Victorian setting into conversation with the post-World War II era in which it was created.

Congrats to MOS Grad Colin Brush (MM 2010) on his appointment as the new Director of the Sarah and Ernest Butler Houston Grand Opera Studio!

HGO is proud to announce Colin Michael Brush as the incoming Director of the Sarah and Ernest Butler Houston Grand Opera Studio!

“For generations now, the Butler Studio has readied brilliant young artists for careers on the great stages of the world, starting with our own. We are thrilled to bring Colin Michael Brush to Houston, where he will use his multifaceted experience and expertise to nurture the growth of these remarkable artists,” says General Director and CEO Khori Dastoor.

A former Bosch Foundation Fellow and the recipient of a Flausen arts research grant, Brush holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Music degree in Opera from the University of Maryland.

“I am so passionate about this art form,” says Brush. “I am honored by the faith HGO has put in me to further its mission. Our choices today profoundly influence opera’s future. We must champion extraordinary new talents as we honor our traditions. Throughout my career, I have sought to prepare artists for not only their own success, but also the success of the operatic art. I can think of no better place to continue this work than with HGO in Houston.”

MOS joins the greater opera community in mourning the passing of Corradina Caporello, a world renowned Italian Diction Coach. Ms. Caporello worked with our MOS singers on Italian Diction for 5 different productions since 2015, including our most recent production of Don Giovanni this past April. An amazing educator, she imparted knowledge with gentle expectations and set the bar high knowing the singers could reach their potential. We will miss her.

The Juilliard School mourns the passing of Corradina Caporello, an inspired teacher of Italian lyric diction to students and artists for nearly four decades. Her deep insights into language and singing influenced performances on opera and concert stages worldwide.

She taught not only singers but also conductors, coaches, and generations of teachers who will carry on her legacy. Her profound commitment to teaching and love for her students made her a central part of vocal education at Juilliard. She will be dearly missed.
