We braved the snow for this afternoon's Helen and Arthur E. Johnson Depression Center 14th Annual Luncheon! Ted Lasso's Brendan Hunt, alongside emcee Reggie Rivers, brought humor and insight to a powerful conversation on mental health, resilience, and the importance of self-trust.

November is Native American Heritage Month, a meaningful time for students to explore the rich stories, perspectives, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. This month, let’s celebrate Native voices and commit to honoring diverse perspectives all year long!

Fifteen years ago, on October 28, 2009, Judy and Dennis joined President Barack Obama as he signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law. The legislation expanded prior federal hate crimes law to include sexual orientation, gender, gender identity and disability.

This weekend marked the final “Bear to Make a Difference Gala” benefitting the Matthew Shepard Foundation. We are very honored to have been a part of this amazing event over the past few years. Judy & Dennis Shepard inspired and led a movement to erase hate and make the world a better place in honor of their son Matthew who was brutally murdered just for being different.

This year, we celebrated two huge milestones. First, we honored the 15th Anniversary of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act (Shepard-Byrd Act), the federal hate crimes legislation signed into law by President Obama, and second, a very special Presidential Medal of Freedom. Earlier this year, President Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Judy Shepard for galvanizing millions of Americans to stand against anti-LGBTQ+ hate.

May we all keep the spirit of Matthew alive in our daily interactions with others and help continue the fight for equal rights and equal respect for everyone.

Every Friday during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we will highlight an organization dedicated to supporting survivors and ending domestic violence. Today, we’re proud to feature Latina SafeHouse!

Latina SafeHouse provides bilingual and culturally sensitive services to Latina survivors of domestic violence and their families. These services are essential, especially for Spanish-speaking Latinas who face unique and intersectional barriers. They work closely with other organizations, law enforcement, and legal advocates at the Rose Andom Center and throughout the region, supporting survivors as they rebuild their lives. If you would like to learn more or donate to Latina Safehouse, please visit https://latinasafehouse.org/!
