It Ends

“It all ends well. This much I know.”

Our final book ends our story just as it started. An epic way to show the end of Edward’s ”story” in front of his family and friends, leaving them with a lifetime of lessons from each of his tales as he descends into his final book. “It was a perfect tale” and the tears were flowing for this one.

Showdown

“Life is a trial.”

This story book creatively opens up a dream scene for Edward. The lighting and transition from the Bloom’s living room into the Edward’s dream was one of our favorites of the show! A fun, yet tense ensemble number that intensified and emphasized the strain between Edward and his son Will.

“I will shower you with flowers.”

The Human Cannon-Ball takes us from the Calloway Circus to Auburn University in the blink of an eye. We close out Act 1 with the audience “showered with flowers” as hundreds of daffodils fell from the sky during one of the show’s most passionate numbers.

The Story Behind the Story: from the beginning moments of choosing Big Fish as our spring musical, we wanted take a unique approach to the set in order to enhance the storytelling nature of the show. By creating “story books” as the base set, our goal was that with the opening of each book, was an opening of the audience into Edward’s imagination as he told his magical stories to his son Will. Practically, this abstract set design was to also assist the audience in following the distinction between the imaginary and present reality based on whether our story books were open or closed. The set climaxed as Edward descended into his “It Ends” book upon his death, indicating that his story was over, but the lessons his stories taught would be passed on for generations to come.

Take a look at the process behind our set! From initial schemes from our set designer and parent-architects, to our prototype book for our crew to practice with while rehearsing at Elizabeth Foward Middle School, to building our books (some up to 12 feet high) at an off site workshop donated by Elizabeth Township Commision and President Josh Walls, to transporting each individual piece to Thomas Jefferson High School, to their final assembly by dedicated parents, and finally their intricate hand-painting and detailing by our very talented students and families. These books were no easy feat especially with the complications of not having a true “home base”, but it all came to life with the help of so many people in our village!
