Inclusion is extremely important in all aspects of life. Today on , I am talking about how to make your wedding events accessible for people with disabilities, short term injuries and chronic health concerns.
This topic is so very personal to me. As many of you know, I myself have a disability, a degenerative neurological disease called Muscular Dystrophy which affects my muscles and subsequently my heart and lungs. It has tested my physical and mental strength time and time again through my life, and yet, has taught me invaluable lessons about how STRONG I really am. *Ohh the irony*
Besides my work with Roots of Life Photography, I serve as the Project Director for a grant that seeks to provide leadership training for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities on how to become their own advocates as well as provide support for local advocacy groups around the state. We also participate in legislative initiatives and work on topics that affect people with disabilities: sexual assault, human trafficking and LQBTQ advocacy.
For YEARS I struggled to balance all of these roles. Struggling to fit in with the wedding industry, the perils of managing my disease and working hard to promote education and awareness of the struggles people with disabilities face has been an exhausting journey, yet one I wouldn’t change for anything.
Once I let go of the pressure, competition, anxiety, insecurity and fear in juggling all of these things, I noticed opportunities to merge my worlds together in a way that feels like ME!
Writing has always been a passion of mine and I am so honored to share some of the things I’ve learned about accessibility and inclusion over on love. Beyond that, I am incredibly honored to document these special memories for my cherished RLP clients. I thank each of you for welcoming me into your lives, your families and believing in me as an artist and professional.
My cup runneth over with blessings and opportunities to serve others and nothing could make me prouder.
Thank you all for following along on this journey as I work towards blending these facets of myself together!
Xx Tara
