We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Terry Helder passing. Terry judged many of our shows throughout the years and will be missed by so many. He was an amazing judge, friend and mentor. I personally loved showing under him and he taught me so very much. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Peg Helder and their family🤍

✨Class of the Week✨

IN HAND TRAIL

- From our Rulebook: Trail: Open to horses 1 year of age or older. To be judged 100% on manner of the horse navigating the obstacles. Class will consist of at least 6 obstacles from the list in the AMHR Rulebook. Jumps will not be able to be an obstacle in the trail class. Being off course or refusal of 3 or more obstacles, with 3 attempts each, will result in elimination.
- Halter Obstacle Rules from AMHR Rulebook (begin on pg 238): I included screenshots from the Rulebook; there was so much to type in and this was the easiest way
- Attire and Tack: closed toed shoes, long sleeve collared shirt or similar, gloves and hat are not required. Similarly to showmanship if horse and exhibitor looks their best they’ll present the best as well! Tack for your horse should be a leather show halter, silver or plain is fine. If using a chain it must be under the horses chin and NOT over the nose.
- No whips or treats of any kind for encouragement are allowed. If either are used that will result in immediate elimination.
- Walk throughs will be provided for the trail classes, these are great opportunities to walk the course and get distancing/correct approaches figured out prior to showing. This is also a great time to ask questions about the course!
- In the Ring: Make sure you know the pattern, including starting and ending cones/spots. The horse should willingly follow the lead of the exhibitor, and maneuver the obstacles with ease. The “cleaner” and “smoother” an obstacle looks the higher score you will receive.
- Tips and Tricks: Practice is incredibly important again. Trail is challenging because of so many different obstacles offered. It is best to expose your horse to many different obstacles and set-ups so the day of the show you’re not shocked by a pattern obstacle.
- ***Most patterns for shows are not posted until morning of the show***

✨CLASS OF THE WEEK✨

Jumper

Horses must be a minimum of 3 years and older to compete in the Jumper class.

From our Rulebook: Jumper: Horses to jump a course of four to six jumps. To be judged on accumulated faults only, unless there is a clean round, in which case there will be a timed jump-off.
Causes for elimination: 3 refusals; off course; or crossing your own path (as in circling between fences not as retaking a fence from a refusal); fall of horse or exhibitor; jumping of obstacle by exhibitor; carrying a whip; and an unsound horse

Jump-off: All clear rounds (no faults) from first round, will advance to the timed round. The bump-off will be held over the same course. The height of two jumps will be increased not less than 1 inch and not more than 6 inches. The jump-off will be timed with a stopwatch and the horse that has the fastest time and fewest faults in the jump-off will be declared the winner. All horses with no faults will then be placed accordingly to their time. Any horse having faults will be placed below the ones with no faults by their time. If only 1 horse goes clear in the first round, they will be declared the winner. A jump off will then be held for the rest of the placings. For the jump off, horses will be placed by fastest time with fewest faults.
Knockdowns- 4 faults per jump

Refusals (stopping at an obstacle without knocking it down and without backing, followed by jumping from a standstill is not penalized. However, if the halt continues or if the horse backs even a single step, side steps or circles to retake the fence, a refusal is incurred.) 1st Refusal- 4 faults; 2nd Refusal-4 faults; 3rd Refusal- Disqualification

Circling any form of circle or circles whereby the horse crosses its original track between two consecutive obstacles, stops advancing toward the next obstacle, except to retake an obstacle for disobedience. Crossing your own path (i.e. circling between fences, NOT retaking a fence)- 3 faults

ELIMINATION: You will be eliminated if you have 3 refusals, are off course, or if the horse or exhibitor falls down.

Hunter and Jumper rules from the AMHR Rulebook can be found here starting on page 244https://www.shetlandminiature.com/_files/ugd/c40877_388d70f6ed864a8b9062d23700e7e48e.pdf

Tips and Tricks: Practice with your horse on control and speed for this class. The important step is to help your horse have a clean round so you can advance to the jump off. Although this is a timed event, slow and steady wins the race when you’re beginning to practice. If your horse knocks a rail in the first round, you might not qualify to the jump-off. Make sure you know the course, including where the Start/Finish line is. This is important because if you do not start/finish where the course states you will be eliminated.

✨CLASS OF THE WEEK✨

Part I

Hunter

Horses must be a minimum of 3 years and older to compete in the Hunter class.

From our Rulebook: Hunter: Horses to jump a course of at least five jumps. To be judged on style, manners and way of going with preference given to those horses who cover the course at an even pace, with free flowing strides in a brisk trot or canter, but must maintain the same gait throughout the entire course.

Causes for elimination: 3 refusals; off course; crossing your own path (as in circling between fences not as retaking a fence from a refusal); fall of horse or exhibitor; jumping of obstacle by exhibitor; carrying a whip; and an unsound horse

Hunter and Jumper rules from the AMHR Rulebook can be found here starting on page 244https://www.shetlandminiature.com/_files/ugd/c40877_388d70f6ed864a8b9062d23700e7e48e.pdf

Tips and Tricks: similarly to other classes presentation is key. Having clean, well fitting tack for your horse and tidy attire for the exhibitor is a great first step. Practice with your horse with many different flower boxes and other props will help for competition time. A hat and gloves are not required for Hunter

Part II Jumper: coming tomorrow!! 😃

✨Class of the Week✨

Color Classes -Multi and Solid Color

From our Rulebook:

Multi-Colored Class- Open to horses that are Pinto and Appaloosa colorings only. Will be judged 100% on color.

Solid Colored Class- open to all horses other than pintos or Appaloosas. Judged 100% on color.

These classes are open to any age/gender of horse as well as any age of exhibitor.

Ring Procedures: Upon entering the ring you will follow the directions of the ring steward to begin walking in a circle with the judge or judges in the middle. It is important to keep a safe distance from the horse in front of you for safety purposes. Once all horses are entered the judge will then make the call for everyone to change directions and walk the opposite way in a circle. There will then be an announcement to stop your horses and show your number to the judge.

Tips: when presenting your number please make sure it can easily be seen (i. e. No hair in the way and the number is facing the correct way). This makes it easier for the judges to quickly and efficiently finish their placings. When presenting your number to the judge make sure they can still see your horse as well because they may be making final decisions still.

I’ve attached some examples of Multi Colored or Solid Colored horses 🐎

✨Class of the Week✨

HALTER

- This week’s class description is for BOTH “regular” halter classes and stock type classes! Horses may NOT cross enter into two types of halter classes. For example, you may not enter your Aged Gelding in both Aged Geldings and Stock Type Geldings. You much choose one

- From our Rulebook: Halter, open to mares, geldings and stallions with age groups of 2 years old and younger and Aged (horses being 3 years and older). Stock type halter and donkey halter will be all ages. To be shown in hand at the walk and trot and to be judged in type, conformation, quality, substance, and soundness. Any horse/donkey showing signs of lameness may be excused from the class by the judge or show committee. Any male horse that has not been gelded, may show in the stallion classes. This includes stallions that are 3 years and older that only have one testicle dropped. From said halter/age division classes there will be a Grand and Reserve Grand awarded for each gender. From the Grand Champions of each gender the judge will select a Supreme Halter Champion.

- Horses that will show in the Grand/Reserve Grand classes will be the 1st and 2nd place horses from 2 year old & under, Aged, and Stock Type of each gender. This means there can be up to 6 horses in the Grand/Reserve classes.

- On days that there is a double judged show they may select different 1st and 2nds from each class eligible. Please keep this in mind that if you and your horse are 1st or 2nd in any of those classes you will be called back for the Grand/Reserve class for their gender. We will make frequent announcements with your number to call you back.

- Supreme Halter- to be eligible for this class your horse must have been presented with a Grand Champion from their gender class. Again with double judged days these could be different horses.

- AMHR Rulebook halter rules begin on page 162 for miniatures. The link can be found here:https://www.shetlandminiature.com/_files/ugd/c40877_388d70f6ed864a8b9062d23700e7e48e.pdf

- Exhibitor/Horse number is very important! If you’ve completed a points entry and Exhibitor/Horse information page you MUST keep the same number all year. This is important so that we do not have 2 or more with the same number. As well as for your year end points to be accumulated correctly. If you enter with the wrong number for Horse/Exhibitor combo your points may not count for year end points!

- Tack: stock type horses MUST be shown in a stock type halter. For regular halter classes horses are shown in a cable style show halter. I have included a few options for these in photos.

- In the Ring: upon entering the class the judge will ask you to walk towards them and trot after you pass them. I have posted a sample of how the halter class pattern is ran. You will follow directions of the ring steward for setting up purposes and your position in the ring. Please be courteous to those around you and leave ample space for the judge to walk around each horse with plenty of space for safety. *** Mare and stallions will be asked to show their bite. I will show a picture of how to present their teeth. The judge will walk around each horse exhibitor combo. I have attached pictures of correct “set-up” placement for both regular and stock type halter classes.

- Tips and Tricks: similarly to showmanship practice is incredibly important! Having your horse automatically square their feet when stopping is a great first step. Your horse must lead easily and trot in hand when asked so the judges may see their gait and soundness.

- If you’re unsure of which class your horse should go in please reach out!! I, Erika, would be glad to offer my opinion if wanted 😁

✨Class of the Week✨

SHOWMANSHIP

- From our Rulebook: Exhibitors are to show to the presiding judge only. Only the handler is judged. The horse is merely a prop to show the showmanship ability of the handler. Management must choose and post the showmanship pattern 1 hour before start of the show. Novice Showmanship is a handler that is in their 1st or 2nd year of showing. Green Horse Showmanship is for a horse 4 years and under. We follow the halves system, I have included a photo as well that explains handler placement in relation to the judge. Here is a link for the AMHR Rulebookhttps://www.shetlandminiature.com/_files/ugd/c40877_388d70f6ed864a8b9062d23700e7e48e.pdf

- Required Attire: Long sleeve shirt, boots, and hat

- Required Tack: If showing in western attire
a western stock type halter, this can have silver and conchos or be a simple leather halter. If a chain is used it must be under the horses chin NOT over the nose. I have included a photo of correct placement.

- I’m including a few sample patterns in with the photos!

- Practice Tips: PRACTICE, PRACTICE, and more PRACTICE. Practice having your horse square their feet every time you stop. Also, have someone help you practice the crossover for when you are presenting to a judge. Watch videos of World and National winning Showmanship runs to help!

(Honey and myself are models for this class as examples! I will be reaching out for pictures from members for other classes 😊)
