Historic Unity Hall We Need Your Help to Save Historic Buildings in Fort Plain, NY
(5)

Our vision for Unity Hall is to make it a meeting place for people in Western Montgomery County: a place for musical performances, a venue for touring bands to play with wonderful acoustics, a place to stage plays and musical theater, a venue for artists to show their work and to teach workshops and classes in the arts. We also hope to include a small café or coffeehouse and a space for special events such as weddings and graduations, all located in the heart of downtown Fort Plain.

As many of you may be aware, the Mohawk Valley Collective is currently in the midst of vital construction and restoration progress at the historic West Hill School in Canajoharie. These important repairs wouldn’t be financially feasible without the outpouring of support from the community, we can’t thank you enough! Some of the improvements are visible to onlookers from the outside, such as the shingles, but there are also many structural improvements that aren’t as obvious to most observers. In the coming days and weeks we will be sharing more about what has been accomplished to date—and what we plan on moving forward—we hope you follow along!

Today is , a day that encourages everyone to express generosity. We know that many nonprofits, large and small, are filling your feeds and inboxes this time of year to request for donations. If you felt it within yourself to include the Mohawk Valley Collective in your charity efforts this time of year, we would be very grateful. No amount is too small.

You could head to our website (🔗 in bio) to make a one time donation via our PayPal. On Facebook, you could also become a monthly contributor via their platform through December 31st, during which Facebook has committed to matching donations. Mailing a check is always an option. Last but certainly not least, volunteering with our organization is always a great way to be directly involved with contributing to our local built environment (more Unity Park volunteer days to be announced soon).

We will continue to share updates about work being done at the West Hill School later this week. Thanks to our community for all of your support.

The Mohawk Valley Collective is launching a 2021 Capital Campaign. As a non-profit community organization focused on the rehabilitation of local historic buildings and providing cultural opportunities, MVC relies on the support of the western-Montgomery County to carry out our mission—this includes everything from volunteer days, sharing our posts online to spread our outreach, attending the concerts and cultural events we host, and crucially providing financial support necessary in order for us to push forward making abandoned landmarks into supportive spaces for our communities. As part of our 2021 Capital Campaign, MVC will be sharing progress updates on each of our projects, as well as incentives to those who are able to offer financial support towards MVC's ongoing work.

While donations are always welcomed, the support of our community is needed urgently now. In late-2019 NYS Homes & Community Renewal (HCR) awarded the MVC a prestigious Main Street Program "Downtown Anchor" grant for $500K to pair with an Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation grant provided to MVC for the same amount, but the Main Street grant award is conditioned on securing financing to pay for at least 50% of the work under the grant up front, at which point they will execute the agreement, with MVC reimbursed upon completion of the work. Due to the pandemic, lenders who have helped us meet such grant matches in the past effectively seized up in early-2020, especially for small non-profits in distressed rural communities like ours. Thus securing the $250K in Community Development (CRA) financing needed has been much more challenging . All donations, no matter the size, towards this goal show HCR that MVC has a network of supporters and a community standing behind our work and who are committed to seeing positive changes in the Mohawk Valley in alignment with the mission of the Collective. Please visit our website, link in bio, to donate to MVC's paypal or send us a message to speak directly with us regarding other donation methods or to arrange a time to speak with the board regarding potential support.
