The American Open has been held since 1965. Each year, it is held during Thanksgiving week. Very close to Disneyland and the shopping mall The Outlets of Orange.

We are now taking registration for the 59th American Open which will be on November 26 - December 1, 2024.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a casual player, the American Open offers something for everyone. In addition to the Main Tournament, there will be Scholastic tournaments for kids, and Action and Blitz tournaments for those who would like faster time controls.

Our Story

A heritage event and an American classic, the American Open is one of the longest running chess tournament in the United States. It was established in 1965 and has since attracted chess players from all over the world and from all levels, beginners to Grandmasters. The American Open is held annually on Thanksgiving weekend and is composed of two concurrent tournaments. The Main Tournament is open to all players, adults and children. The other is the Scholastic Tournament, which is open only to junior players from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Additionally, there will be two side events available to participate, Blitz (Saturday night) and Action Chess (Sunday).
