Who We Are

Three girls who dared to dream of changing the story of their lives are opening their own business doing something they love: flowers. Celebrate the opening of Southside Flower Market with owners Renee Koops, Missie Polakovich and Tracey Gerdeman. Each bring over 30 years of passion and experience in creativity, hospitality and management. We keep an ever-changing selection of beauti

ful seasonal blooms and locally grown flowers and foliage in the shop. Our team is always on hand to create beautiful hand ties and bouquets on request. We specialize in a soft, romantic modern style of floristry design, focused on delivering beautiful color, texture and interest at a reasonable price. In addition, our flower shop has a beautiful selection of handcrafted local gifts. Missie is a floral artist and mom with a long-held dream of starting her own business. Over the years, she has trained with the very best florists in the area. In October, 2017, Missie lost her husband, Jimmy, to a massive heart attack. The loss was devastating but together with her children, Alex and Jacob, they marshaled on with strength and living life to its fullest. With both kids grown and flown, she decided that the time had come to go for it and start that business that she’s always dreamed of owning. Renee has managed locally well-known family owned businesses like Great Lakes Shipping Company, Rose’s Restaurant (Gilmore), Watermark Properties and Reserve GR (DeVos). Her passion for gardening began as a child from her Nana’s (grandmother) garden and trips to the Farmers Market with her. She carries on her Nana's love of gardening with her family and enjoys each year expanding with new varietals of flowers. Renee, her husband, Chris and son Cohen are ready for this next great adventure that she has been envisioning now for several years. Tracey has been involved in the telecommunications field for over 30 years and brings her experience in business and technical operations to help round out the team. Tracey's Mom and Dad, Vi and Pete, passed on their love of gardens, flowers and working hard to do what you love. Renee, Missie and Tracey are familiar faces around Grand Rapids and friends to many. Together as lifelong friends, they are coming back to their old stomping grounds opening their flower market in Breton Village Shopping Center. Freaky Flower Friday goes to the Olympics!

In honor of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics today, I was curious if there was an official flower of the games. And there is!

It’s the Olympic Games Dahlia. In brilliant red, this emblematic flower embodies Olympic passion, ready to light up Parisian gardens this summer. A vibrant floral tribute to the sporting event of the year!

The adventure of this exceptional variety began in the laboratories of the Parc Floral de Paris, where the Olympic Dahlia came to life in jars meticulously supervised by the flower’s creator Christophe Kneblewski. Its petals, in the colors of the Olympic flame, underline the emotional connection between the flower and the spirit of the Games.

We had a fun assignment this week. 😆

These hot dogs mark 50 years of friendship of a customer where the first time she and her friend met they were on vacation in Florida. The weather was bad so they just sat in a bar and ate hot dogs and drank beer all day🤣. These hot dogs are gifted back and forth to each other every year.🌭

Who knew hot dogs could be so sentimental? 🥹 This hilarious (and adorable) story is the perfect reminder that friendship is the best flower of all. 💐

It’s Freaky Flower Friday! And today’s star is the allium flower!

🧐Did you know…

The actual flowers are star-shaped and tiny–up to 100 may make up the sphere of blooms on a single stalk. The flowers’ fragrance is light and similar to violets’, but when the stalk is cut or bruised, Allium gives off a strong scent which proves that it is indeed a giant onion. The onion smell that arises when the stems are cut or crushed but will dissipate once the flowers are in water.

Allium flowers are long-lasting and can be attractive whether left fresh or dried. They come in many colors, including white, yellow, pink, purple, blue, and green, and can be round, oval, or cascading in shape. Allium flower heads are clusters of hundreds of individual florets, and some alliums can grow to be 4–50 inches tall.

The plant’s clean, bold lines make it a showstopper for almost any style of arrangement, whether as a sparse central focus or massed.

Celebrate the opening of Southside Flower Market with owners Renee Koops, Missie Polakovich and Tracey Gerdeman. Each bring over 30 years of passion and experience in creativity, hospitality and management.

We keep an ever-changing selection of beautiful seasonal blooms and locally grown flowers and foliage in the shop. Our team is always on hand to create beautiful hand ties and bouquets on request. We specialize in a soft, romantic modern style of floristry design, focused on delivering beautiful color, texture and interest at a reasonable price. In addition, our shop has a beautiful selection of handcrafted local gifts.

Missie is a floral artist and mom with a long-held dream of starting her own business. Over the years, she has trained with the very best florists in the area, and currently runs her own gig; a floral business in her home. In October, 2017, Missie lost her husband, Jimmy, to a massive heart attack. The loss was devastating but together with her children, Alex and Jacob, they marshaled on with strength and living life to its fullest. With both kids grown and flown, she decided that the time had come to go for it and start that business that she’s always dreamed of owning.
