Did you know…
Hoops for fun and exercise have been around for a long time.
Ancient Greeks often used hooping for exercise and some of the first hoops were made from metal, bamboo, wood, grasses, and even vines!
It was popular in Britain by the 1300’s and in the 1800’s British sailors noticed the similarities in hula dancing in Hawaii and hooping…so it became known as a “hula hoop”.
Did you also know…
Hoops are widely used by Native American dancers and other cultures as well.
It became very popular in the US in the 50’s and Wham-O patented the toy in 1963.
Twenty million Wham-O hula hoops sold for $1.98 in the first six months!!!
In 2018, Marawa Ibrahim, an Australian performer, set a Guinness World Record by simultaneously spinning 200 hoops around her body.
The longest marathon hula hooping is 100 hrs, and was achieved by Jenny Doan (Australia) in Chicago, Illinois, USA, from 19 November to 23 November 2019.
